Keychain shows beach ball when trying to see password

In Mojave, I'm trying to access a password in Keychain. Everything looks fine until I l click on "show password" and I get the spinning beach ball. The problem is not confined to one Keychain entry. I called up Activity Monitor and there's no problem with CPU usage. So what's the issue?

Keychain is waiting on your Keychain password authentication. On my system it pops up dialog asking for keychain password. Are you sure it is not popping up behind some window or different screen?

I guess that's a possibility. It certainly happens with other Keychain passwords I attempt to open but I eventually gave up on the password I was after so can't test it again. But I'm fairly sure no dialog box popped up in the same way. Thanks for your thought though.
