So I've been working for 4 hours on a Keynote presentation for tomorrow. Then I import something from a Powerpoint file. Keynote crashes.

No problem thinks I. I'll just open the savefile. Maybe I've lost 10 mins work but that's fine.

Nope. THERE'S NO AUTO-RECOVER FILE!!! THERE'S NO SETTING TO ACTIVATE AUTOSAVE

How can Apple call this a work application if it doesn't autosave? ARRGH!!!

Other apple apps implement data protection and crash recovery, (iMovie, FCP etc) how about some of it here in KeyNote??

Sorry to hear you lost a ton of work... For future reference though (and until Apple implements an autosave feature into iWork), you may want to checkout EverSave. It's basically a free third-party tool that'll do it for you.
