From Benjamin Mayo in 9-5 Mac Rumors:
https://9to5mac.com/2018/03/27/new-apple-watch-larger-screen-series-4/

Story features a "trendy new design" and longer battery life. ( The battery could have longer life because of new circuit boards and a new SOC.) 15% larger face is spoken of. Not sure if the case will be bigger or smaller bezels. Interesting and exciting.
[doublepost=1522174354][/doublepost]I am pretty sure Apple would keep compatibility with the current band attachment mechanism. Bands are a good revenue item for Apple and the townsfolks would storm the gates with lanterns and pitchforks if they changed band systems.

This is a reliable rumor if it’s coming from Ming Kuo. And it’s also expected that I would believe the enhanced battery life, added health related features and a larger display will be all greatly appreciated. Looking forward to the Series 4.

15% larger face would mean the 38 model to have the face size of the 42 model. I would like that larger face while keeping my preferred case size.

Sound to me like the case will be getting bigger. Do not see how they can get 15% more on the 42mm without making the case larger.

I would not buy any new bands for a while. They are claiming “redesigned”.

I guess it is time for a change. I am in!

Just when I was thinking of swapping my S0 for a S3....I don’t know if I can last another half year with my battery lasting half a day.

Yeah, same boat. I leave mine in theatre mode these days to make it through the whole day. It's a definite struggle. Also don't want to spend over $80 to replace the battery on this now relic of a device, ha.

Does theatre mode help enough to last through the day?

Pretty much. But when I work out I have to airplane mode too usually. (Unless I’m running outside or something, but then I’m usually home and can charge afterwards)

Cool I’ll try theatre mode, battery saving mode is driving me nuts, it’s like i have a obselete watch.

I was on the fence about getting a series 3 but based on this information I plan on waiting. The big question will be how much Apple discounts the S3 to move them out.

Not to mention they might not even come out with a new watch, you might wait for nothing lol...im in the same boat.

Nah I’m pretty sure they will release a new one this year, but I just want an upgrade so badly. You pretty much can’t use a S0 for things other than time and viewing notifications. Replying back messages and siri is a pain in the butt.

Ming has a decent track record of getting it right, though to be fair, even a monkey could predict there will be an Apple Watch update this year.

Someone needs to crunch the numbers and figure out the average timeframe between the date of his prediction and when the product is physically in our hands. Because every time he opens his mouth, people all start yammering about waiting til whatever product he writes about comes out.

I seem to recall quite a lead time in several instances.

It’s been over three years, the Apple Watch is due for design and I have every reason to believe this rumor from a reliable Apple insider. A larger display, battery and improved health sensors seems very logical to believe a new Apple Watch will release in fall 2018.

I’m of the opinion that the watch should get thinner. I think it’s kind of thick off of the wrist.

This topic is brought up a lot. You can put me in the minority where I actually like the thickness of the Apple Watch, especially with the stainless model and the added weight. Its never been a request to have it thinner.

Yeah, I like the thickness too, a bit of added weight gives a more premium feel.

Actually they only need to reduce the bezels by about 1mm on each edge to get a 15% increase in screen size. This is pretty easy with the current cases because the bezels are currently over 3.5mm according to these schematics for the 38mm:

As a watch app developer I am hoping that they keep the number of pixels the same or it will mean a lot of work converting apps. If that is the case then the extra 15% will just mean that you don't need to bring your watch quite as close to your face in order to see the same detail.

I am not criticising the 15% improvement. I think that the bezels are too big on the current watch and reducing them by even 1mm will definitely improve the looks. Large bezels were a reasonable compromise for the first design, but it makes sense to reduce them when they can. But I think that a 15% increase sounds a lot more in theory than it will probably look in practice, which is worth bearing in mind if you are considering waiting for the Series 4 purely because of this rumour.

You don't really notice the bezels though, especially with the curvature of the glass... I'm not really fussed about an added 1mm in size to be honest.

The use of OLED screens also helps, because they can be completely black, which means that you cannot tell the edge of the screen from the bezel. Developers are encouraged to go right up to the edges of the screen, both to maximise the screen space and also to minimise the visual effect of the wide bezels.

Of course, since I just bought the 3. Used Android Wear (Fossil), and finally made the switch. Now they may release the new one with a bigger case/screen? My only complaint so far is that it’s too small. Ugh

I was going to wait for a AW4 but since i'm a long time Apple user i have the experience that whenever Apple changes it design it has flaws.

I had a iPhone 4, switched to iPhone 6 and now a iPhone X. Only the X has no flaws, the rest has.
Apple had 3 years to master this design so i think i'm gonna buy myself a S3 next week instead of waiting

I had JUST started considering that this might be the year I upgrade my original series (zero?) Watch, and a larger screen (assuming it doesn't become a chunkier watch), and health monitors, sound great.

When they add a FaceTime camera I will consider upgrading from the AW3 LTE. Beyond that I’m not sure what else could be improved. I have 0 issues with battery life and I’m a heavy user of LTE daily.

There's a lot of curve in the bezel now, though. The glass starts dropping down to the case edge almost immediately after the display's boundary.

What if it could be flattened? Imagine the case staying the same, but smush the display glass down, making the flat area larger.

I think the case-and-display dimensions can still be adjusted while keeping the band attachment slots the same. I'd like to see what they can manage to do.

Still don't think it should get any thicker, though. It's thinner than my Seiko dive watch, sure, but it's thicker than my Rado, and probably my Citizen, too.
