Kickstarter Project - The KADi Port for Retina Macbook

- So why do you expect the mDP on the hub to do anything other than video/audio?

- Which won't exist on a mDP connection...

Waste your time trying to get it to work if you want. It won't.
While you're at it, get yourself a Thunderbolt external hard drive and a Thunderbolt Display and daisy-chain them off the mDP on the hub...

He might as well buy xbox games for a PS4 since the disc are just dumb disks and both the xbox and PS4 are both capable of reading dumb discs. It's not like one system uses a disc with dynamic image.

Guys, let's not get up in arms here. My take on it is this - since the USB interface is agnostic to the actual data being transferred (Just like TB for the record) it is nothing like a dedicated mDP port on a Mac. Of course those would not work with Thunderbolt, because they were not connected to any kind of data bus on the other end, just video/audio, that makes complete sense, and you guys are 100% correct, that is totally undisputed. It also is not what I am talking about at all!

Like TB, USB is an all in one, power/data/video/audio capable system bus. Apple's adapter is a "dumb" adapter. You're right that it has nothing to do with mDP. It doesn't expect to connect to TB necessarily either, it just converts the Ethernet signals to signals on specific pins in the male end, which happens to be mDP. It is the system bus' job to interpret those received signals, not the adapter's. It's not like Apple's Lightning adapters that are active, dynamic and digital, where the pins can take on different functions with software on the tiny little microchip in the adapter. We're talking about old fashioned mechanical fixed and static pin configurations.

Of course Apple's support site says you need to have a Thunderbolt enabled Mac to use the adapter, because they are making sure people don't buy it to use with their existing older mDP only Macs.

Do you guys understand what I am trying to say?

1394 and USB 2.0 both had 4 pins and yet were not compatible. Can you explain why it was not possible to put a USB type A connector on mini 1394 device yet you can do this with thunderbolt and USB 3?

The Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter DOES NOT WORK in a mDP!!!!!!!!!!!!

It only works in a Thunderbolt port.

The mDP in the Kodi will work for any mDP devices that plug into it.

The Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter is NOT a mDP adapter.

I backed it, but I doubt it will be done like it is presented:
  • It's just a 3D printed mockup
  • The space betwwen port could not let people plug all at once (just compare the mockup and the cables pictures...)
  • I don't think it's possible to produce a small quantity of product at such a low price without selling cheap quality.

On the other side, I managed to secure a early backer spot of Hub+, someone should have remove his pledge, very happy ! :D

It's worth noting their FAQ, you will find they are confident the ports will fit, it is pretty small though, wouldn't be much breathing room

I don't even think they mention it's thunderbolt? The photos say Mini Display Port

Someone on here was trying to say the ethernet/thunderbolt adapter would work on this hub because the connectors are the same. The port is a MDp as you see in the pictures and description with no way whatsoever to work with the ethernet adapter.

To everyone who, quite rightly, called me out on the Apple Ethernet/TB adapter working with this hub (some of you pretty agressively :p) - it is official: You are all completely correct

I raise my hand up and will take it like a man. I was completely wrong, no conditions, caveats, or excuses. Put it down to a (very rare IMHO ;)) moment of stupidity on my part. I'll even leave all the posts above unedited so you can all have a laugh at me. :D ...and those that don't read whole threads can continue to make new posts about how dumb I was.

I want to post this because I don't want to discredit the people making this hub. As suggested by others there was a miscommunication between myself and them. I wrote them this morning again, explained more clearly what I was asking, and that I had received some backlash on their answer to my question. Again it only took about 5 minutes before they came back with a clear answer that it would not work, as the mDP port is only being fed full DP 1.2 compliant signals, nothing else, so it is indeed a standard, good old fashioned mDP port.

They apologised for the misunderstanding and have even offered to move me up to the next pledge level for free for my troubles.

And you declined, right?

- Fair enough. I can respect that.
Glad we got it sorted out. :)

I was a little interested in some of these accessory Kickstarters, but after seeing how many of them are delayed and/or come out in a form rather different than they originally advertised, I just can't justify supporting them. I'll buy finished, available products with final specs instead.

I'll continue using kickstarter to support independent artistic endeavors like board games, album releases, graphic novels, and films. They may get delayed, but they lack the obsoleting factor of "someone else released a better comic book while I was waiting!"

Please. Like you would have.

My point was the the op created all the drama, asked the wrong question and then was wrong.

So the company should apologize with a gift?

Anyway, they offered and even I would have accepted. :)
