It's just above the wheel, below the body of the plane (or fuselage I suppose) but above the wheel in a little gap. What an awful story.

Indeed. Here in Europe they find several bodies a year in the wheel wells of flights from Africa. I only hope the lack of air pressure leaves them unconscious before the cold gets them. Very unpleasant way to go.

November 15th, 2010 Charlotte N.C. weather, 17ºC, no precipitation.

Probably not much, as he didn't seem to have the smarts about what he was up against.

Once you are above the clouds, temperature drops well into the minuses. Lowest I can remember was -52ºC, which would kill you in no time at all, particularly if you aren't dressed for it.
