It isn't really a "higher resolution" screen - it has the same PPI as the MacBook. It is just a larger screen so can accommodate more pixels at the same PPI.

The Pro really should have a 1680x1050 resolution..

but it cannot be argued that 1440x900 is not greater than 1280x800 so your post is useless. In the end you're still getting more real estate. I honestly don't know if id want 1680x1050 on a 15" screen. I love high res stuff but that might be overkill for the size.

Interesting that the people who got offended by the OP got censored but he did not. Says something about the mods I suppose, but not something good.

It's stupid. Everyone has different needs and will buy what satisfies that. If you want a large desktop that has the same upgradability as a laptop, then the imac might be right for you. If you want the power of an imac while being mobile, then a mbp is perfect. In the end a mbp is more flexible and convenient overall, but for desktop usage an imac is a good alternative.

That's not what he's talking about. Probably the thread got modified before you read it. But otherwise yea I agree with you

MBP is the most beautiful notebook in the world.

How could you regret it?

I'm gonna keep my 2008 MBP for years and years - just to appreciate its engineering. I would even head out and buy a powerbook G4 for the same reason if I had money to burn.

Why the face palm for the guy, he has a very good point, the pro machine is only pro in name, it's just a marketing tactic so folks will buy into I've got the best this and that BS, ...and before you say anything I know the video cards have a bit more VRAM but c'mon , not really pro in the true sense of the word,.... uncalled for and severe over use of face palm images by you sir

MBPs have the build quality rare PC notebook has. I carry my (s/h) PB12 in a sleeve for 2+ years now and it is still in the same shape when I have bought it. I expect the same from my new UMBP17.

On other side, quite well spec'ed Fujitsu Siemens after 1.5 years and 2 trips already has two cracks on its case. Needless to mention to that it overheats easily, making its two fans to go nuclear. At least twice during my trip activities I had to shutdown the damm piece to make it quite during meetings.

Spec-wise the FS I have in office easily beats any MBP produced the same year. Mobility-wise... heck even my 5yo PB12 has chances to outlast it.

I think Apple's designation is valid. And many pros I have met - people who really have to use laptops to do work on the road - would confirm it: resilience and reliability are the most important factors for the pro laptops. Connectivity comes second. And somewhere after that come CPU/GPU performance. Because even if it has supper-dupper CPU/GPU/RAM, but it breaks under slightest stress, then it is already disqualified as pro system.

What most people seem to be really here after is MBG: "MacBook Gamer" ;)

To the original question: Keep what you have, it's only tech whore buyer panic when new machines come out, I get it sometimes ..resist! resist reeesiiiisssst!.

I second that. Even if you bought it by mistake - try to take advantage of it and exploit it to the fullest.

No. The Pro has dual graphics cards, hybrid sli capabilities in Snow Leopard, a better build quality, a far better screen, a faster processor, more RAM, a larger screen etc etc
Yeah okay, so really i just bought it for the mobile powerhouse, haha :D
Cause i do a fair bit of FCP and photoshop work with large RAW files so i needed it i guess.
But yeah, as someone said in here, i think i will just keep it!
I can get a 500GB 7200rpm drive, and if 8GB ram becomes available, well ;)

what is your point? sell the thing if you don't want it anymore, you are making a mountain out of a molehill.
just thought id ring up a bit of discusiion and see what peoples views were was all.

Haha i have no idea!

Good point i guess, yeah i wanna go buy a powerbook just cause i love them haha :D

Interesting thread!

I would keep the MBP, I am in the same situation I think.

I have been totally undecided by either iMac or MBP but I think most people are right by the fact MBP has nearly everything iMac has apart from large screen. I have not gone for the iMac becuase if I did I would have to sit in the spare room every time I wanted to use it...it's unsocialble!!!

I want to have a MBP so I can sit in the lounge or dining table and play games, all other stuff etc.

Im just not sure if to get 17" or 15" !!! Opinions?! Don't really want to spend so much on 17" but could...

get the 17" if you want more of the screen real estate, 15" if you can do with it and worry about portability.....just get one that is appropriate for your needs.

I recently got a Unibody MBP (see sig), and its my first "proper" apple machine, being that it is now my main computer. I got a laptop as i am a college student and decided that it would be best. So far ive taken it out the house 3 times, and i have bought a 23" monitor for it (at 200 quid might i add) as well as a new keyboard and mouse just to use it as a desktop. It does work well as a desktop, but damnit i cant help but think i shouldve got a godamn iMac.
Anyone know how much id get for the MBP? just out of interest... its got applecare and its in mint condish. Might i also add its a "perfect" MBP, i.e no overheating issues, backlight bleed, scratches, speaker rattle etc.
Just thought that might help a little.
I mainly got the pro for the graphics, so i could game - but i dont really want to game anymore :/ i also thought about getting a macbook instead of a macbook pro, i.e swap a MBP for a macbook and some money to get a camera or something... i dunno.
Maybe someone wants to swap their uni MB for my MBP? haha :D

Keep the MBP, but take it out on dates. Go sit in a cafe and have a coffee while you do your school work on it. Best reason to have a laptop is to use it to get your out of the house, so you don't become a shut-in.

lol, I was thinking of going to the cafe just to see what it was like to work with my MBP with my latte* at a coffee shop. I had a PowerMac before.

Totally agree with a big smirk on my face :D

*(hot chocolate really but I wanted to say latte, lol)

True.. 1680x1050 on a 15" panel isn't overkill. You could argue the same about 1920x1200 on the 17" MBP.

Long as the PPI doesn't get ridiculous and we have size 20 font's looking like size 5. Maybe we'll see 1680x1050 in the 15" MBPs once Snow Leopard ships - if it ever does include fully working resolution independence.

i went through the same situation as you. but honestly, assuming that youre a college student who wants to save money as much as possible, i would just keep with what you have. youll loose too much money for what its worth (unless you can somehow miraculously not lose any money).

your mbp is a a powerful laptop (plus u use adobe) and those times where you DO need portability will come in handy. everythings set and go pretty much. i dont think its worth the trouble.

Your point would be true if we were talking about the 14" iBook, where you had the same resolution, 1024 x 768, as the 12" screen. But in this case the screen has a higher resolution than the MacBook. However, it does not have a higher density screen, which is what I think you are talking about.

I do agree about the 1680 x 1050 and I would love the MacBook to have the option for 1400 x 900.

My UBMP never leave the house... I use it as a desktop with my 24" LED ACD. I love the fact that I can sleep with it at night. :)

Kinda regretting MBP purchase

SACRILEGE ! Don't ever speak of a Macbook pro acquisition with such disdain!
You will only regret not having it if you get rid of it.

Haha trust me mate if i could afford a 17" id bloody get one :D

Yep, haha :) Ive agreed to keep it now :D Thanks guys :p

id LOVE for my MBP to have 1680x1050... ,many other 15.4 inch laptops do

Yeahh i guess so :)

Oh yeah, and for the backlit keyboard and trackpad, and firewire, but i guess you can get 2/3 of them on a macbook...
i Basically bought the pro for everything it has above a MB, i guess :D

Keep the UBMP!! Trust me, I had the UBMP, went to the UMB 2.4 for two weeks and now today switching it back for the UBMP :)--It took me this to realize just really, how nice the UBMP really is! Nothing like a bigger screen especially when away from the house...We also have the imac great machine we use only for home use. performance wise, no real big differences... good luck!!!!

picard-no-facepalm.jpg

That face palm picture is more annoying than anyone's comment.

I'd have to vote to keep it. It will serve your needs now and who knows what you may want to do in the future. If you downgrade to a UMB you can say goodbye to some decent sound without having to use headphones. If you watch any online video not only the sound but the screen on the 15" is MUCH better. They are great machines and imo MBP is well wroth the additional money over the MB, not to mention 13" is just to small for my taste, but then again I ended up with the 17" version and love it.

Don't listen to the haters and the "why did you buy it then?" crowd :) Just enjoy it for what it is. Even a year from now if you wanted to sell it to replace it, it will still bring a nice fair price if you take care of it :) Enjoy.

If you're dead set on an iMac, please do get one. The MBP sounds like it is more suited to your needs, however, and you wouldn't have to go through the hassle of re-selling all the accouterments that you've acquired if you just keep it.

i was in the same boat as you when i was purchasing my Mac in October. I was set on the 24" 2.80GHZ iMac, but my girlfriend has a nice DEll XPS desktop she bought a year or two ago that she uses for graphic design. So i figured why have two desktops.

I am so glad that i didnt buy the iMac. I do still want one, though:)

I have since bought a bluetooth mouse ( i am going to apple to find out why it doesnt work correctly), an external HDD and just bought a 23" monitor yesterday. Now i just need a bluetooth or wireless keyboard, speakers and a griffin elevator and i'll be set (oh and a larger internal drive and a larger timbuk2 bag:) )
