Just use iCloud storage...no point now in buying the larger storage models when iCloud is so cheap.

I only use icloud for backups, I use a 256GB ssd for storage.

Didn’t even know the Xr had a 128gb option.

Wish my iPhone X did. 64gb to 256gb isn’t really customer friendly lol

Yea it's only $50 more whereas the 256GB is $100 more. $50 for 64 more GB is a great deal

It's the way Apple has done business for about a decade. They know that the base one is too small and then dont offer a reasonably priced upgrade, which is why it's such a huge deal that they're offering it on the XR. Just one more benefit for those of us that see the value in that phone. Relatively anyway. It's still an expensive phone.

Yeah but just a short time ago they offered 64gb 128gb and 256gb respectively for their flagship models.

My 6plus was a 128gb. Far less than a decade ago.

I don’t want to get on a Tim Cook rant, but...

I get they want to add a 512 to the mix and drop one of the sizes.

I never get on Apple for anything (check all my posts never negative towards Tim or Apple).

However if they truly cared they would have obviously dropped the 64gb. They know now a days the 128gb is the sweet spot for most. Especially phones that record in 4K.

Its a business though.

Their premium phones should have started at 128 imo.

That is why I got 512GB. I couldn’t fit all the music I wanted to on the 256. I have almost 28,000 songs on my Max right now. A lot of that is classical so a lot of tracks that are well over 3-4 minutes wrong.
That's my issue - I can't fit all of my music on my 256. I should have went for the 512GB device.

This whole "Just use iCloud" narrative is...

Just because people want higher storage doesn't mean they dont use iCloud.

I use iCloud and it’s fantastic. Means I spend less as I only need the 64gb model.

Just an example...my kids play Fortnite. So, i have the app on my phone too. (And no, i do not play it because i suck badly at it.)

Fortnite app is just 148 MB when you first download it. But throughout the time that i have had it, there has been numerous updates...now, the game is taking up 3 GB of storage!!

GRID Autosport is just over 4GB.

Most new games that have good graphics are at least 500 MB. Most of the time, around 1GB on average.

Some of the Movies with HD (4k) that i have on my iPhone Xs:

Arrival 4.86GB.
Deadpool 5.36GB.
Forrest Gump 9.4GB (!!!)
Max Max 8.06GB
John Wick 6.55GB

Fancy stuff on your phone requires lots of storage these days.

Luckily I'm not big on games on my phone so that's not something that will affect me. I just play words with friends & football strike, might get back into angry birds now with the bigger screen though.

Let’s say you keep your phone for 3 years.

50GB iCloud = $0.99.....over 3 years = $35.64

200 GB = $2.99.....over 3 years = $107.64

DIFFERENCE = $72 over 3 years. (I won’t even compare free ICloud storage because no one has this.)

(I won’t even go to 2 TB for this comparison.)

From Apple site, price difference b/w 64GB and 256GB Xr is $150. (Max difference in cost for Xr.)

Now, resale value difference b/w 64GB and 256GB for iPhone 8+ and X are: (using Verizon trade-in value)

8+ $395 (64) and $440 (256) Difference = $45

X $515 (64) and $585 (256) Difference = $70

(I will pick average difference of $60 for this comparison.)

So, by going with iCloud storage (200GB) and 64GB Xr...you pay $72 more for iCloud but saved $150 on the device cost itself. Profit = $78.

If you went with 256 GB Xr but stayed with 50GB iCloud, you save $72 on iCloud but spend $150 more on device. Cost = $78.

BUT, you have to figure in the RESALE VALUE. And that “SAVINGS/PROFIT” from buying 64GB Xr is getting less and less...around $18 ($78 - $60).

So, grand profit of $18. Of course, this will decrease IF you decide to keep your phone longer than 3 years.

IS IT WORTH IT to save $18 by going with 64GB? YMMV.

Well of course it depends on your usage and individual circumstance. As I have previously said. I pay .79p a month for iCloud (£9.48 a year), upgrade my phone yearly and get free Apple Music streaming so I don’t see the benefit in spending the extra for more storage.

With good LTE/WiFi speed, the benefit of iCloud storage goes beyond physical storage. You don’t need to transfer data from an old phone to a new one, every Apple device that you own can access to them and there’s no risk of losing the data if the phone is lost.

Very true. But then if someone breaks into your account (via phishing)...........

But you do bring up good points regarding cloud storage.

2 factor authentication should help prevent that. That and, one should never store their data in one place. CCC it to external drives regularly (or time machine). I've had Verizon (now Frontier) FIOS for many many years - went full cloud back in 2011 and realized that was so so dumb. It took the loss of a handful of files after an account got deleted that changed me. Now I have iCloud with files on my drive backed up to 2 external drives 60+ miles apart on a daily basis (work/home). Work is OneDrive.

But yeah, I'm more of the: I'd rather have more space than I need if I can afford it. I lived with 16GB iPhones till it hurt then when I could afford it, I never looked back. Having the space to download movies, take videos, do whatever I want to do is liberating.

Apple Music + Offload apps = 64GB
For me, it's the combination of 2 TB iCloud storage plan (I have a 1 TB worth of photos and videos) and iTunes Match that negates any need for higher storage capacity.

Since I have more than 1 iPhone in my household, paying $9.99/month of iCloud is cheaper than paying $150 more for each iPhones, not to mention added benefit of having the entire photos, videos, and messages synced and backed up on the cloud.
