I worry that the knit mesh at the top is the weakest part of the headphone and that it will be ripped over time. There is no easy way to replace it. Thus, in addition to an already very expensive price, the headphones are almost. screaming from AppleCare warranty.

Thoughts?

Disassembly of the Max showed it should be replaceable by Apple,
and it is not knit fabric but a moulded urethane that is very strong and durable, but a sharp object will pierce it,
If you plan to take it on the go, then AppleCare might be advisable :)

Has anyone managed to damage the mesh on the headband? It seems surprisingly fragile, enough so that I'd consider getting AppleCare+ for it even though I haven't purchased that for anything in a long time. It looks like the headband itself is easily replaceable, and so long as the cost of replacement is reasonable, I'd be willing to take my chances.

I bought this on Amazon

I guess not surprising that these accessories have hit Amazon so quickly. I think the mesh headband is wonderful in terms comfort. It's so much better than the usual leather and foam headbands. I'd be willing to sacrifice a little breathability for something thin and stretchy to go over it, to be the thing that snags, and not the mesh. The sweater is sort of what I had in mind, but willing to wait for something a bit thinner and better looking.

really? it'll be fine...just don't mistreat your £550 headphones, buy a better case for it when you travel and you'll be fine

Do you own a pair? The mesh (or molded urethane, or whatever it is) is really fine. Fine enough that it will "catch" if I run my finger across it, so I'm careful about how I handle it. I really like the clarity and sound, but these are not practical for travel. I picked up a Waterfield case because I really like their products, and I'd never travel with these. I pack light and use (or used to use, when we still travelled...) a pair of Airpods Pros for that. My guess is that some of the other popular ANC headphones have cases that are half the size of the Waterfield case, maybe even less.

Yep, I do have a pair. Not in the slightest bit concerned that I will damage the mesh. Or any part of the headphones.

Nothing wrong with handling them carefully and buying a travel case. But there’s so many silly products coming out designed to go over the mesh to protect it. It’s madness and personally think it’ll deter from the comfort.

I agree. Rather than ruining the design and appearance of the Max with a cheap silicone cover, for another £36 you can get AppleCare plus and not worry at all
Really? Have you even read Apple's terms and conditions for AppleCare+ yourself or is your advice based on hearsay as it appears?

If you actually read their terms and conditions you will see on the very first part - let me repeat that for those like yourself who don't read - the very first part specifically states:

"Apple will not provide Hardware Services or ADH Services in the following circumstances:

to protect against normal wear and tear, or to repair cosmetic damage not affecting the functionality of the Covered Equipment;"

I have AppleCare+ and I do due diligence and protect my equipments myself. AppleCare+ is an insurance, not a license to be THAT person.

I would consider that should the mesh wear out within the first year that it is a product that’s not durable enough to withstand every day use. The mesh is not cosmetic and is an essential part of the product. The AirPods Max are already weighty enough and adding extra bulk such as silicone mesh guards and ear cups, for me destroys the aesthetics of the headphones. If the mesh wore out in the first year then I would be on the phone to Apple insisting on replacement.
