You know, you're right, however it isn't there when turned on or in use, its noticeable when turned off.

Really?....This has to be unacceptable, right?..Was this also known in the first and second generators? why does this NOT happen with cellphones?WTFack...

I just bought a new 10GB iPod at best buy today.. haven't had a lick of trouble.. I even took it to the gym already for use while on the treadmill.

I LOVE IT!!!

If worried about how sensitive the buttons are, use the lock switch on the iPod so your button presses are not registered until you want them to be.

All hard drives are like that when you buy a 15GB Hard Drive it usually only has about 14.2 GB of usuable space. Now the good question is...why dont they make the hard disks 15.8GB so they are actually 15GB of usuble space?

I think the issue is really with the definition of gigabyte. It can be either 1 billion bytes exactly (which is probably what the manufacturer reports) or it can be 1073741824 bytes (1024^3 bytes; which is probably what the iPod itself and iTunes report). The second definition is the traditional one used by computer scientists and friends because it's a nice power of 2, the first is used by PR folks because it's a nice power of 10 and because it inflates the numbers.

If you still don't get it, consider that 15,000,000,000 bytes (15 PR GB) divided by 1,073,741,824 is approx. 13.97 traditional GB -- not quite 15GB.

Backlight doesn't always work

Anyone else had this problems?
Sometimes, my backlight just doesn't work. No matter if I choose "backlight" from the menu, hold down the menu key or change the Preferences for it, it just doesn't work at all!
When I put the iPod to sleep (play button long) and wake it up again, it will work, but after 2 times putting it to sleep again, the 3rd time when it wakes up, it doesn't work again... please, tell me if I have to return it or if it's a known bug!

Apple addresses this issue in the knowledgebase:

I'll quote myself here, because I figured out what the problem is. So, new known issue:
When you turn the iPod off and immedialtely on again, the backlight will not work unless you repeat the progress and wait a few seconds before turning it back on. :D

Issues with my 30GB iPod

I have already seen my two biggest concerns in the list:

1. Sometimes the iPod likes to just skip to the next sone when there is about 30 seconds left.
2. That weird rainbow effect on the top of the LCD by the headphone jack.

I wonder if Apple is working on correcting the first. Not to sure what can be done about the second.

Has anyone taken their's to an Apple store and tried to get a replacement because of the rainbow effect? Does this only occur on a handful if new iPods (perhaps only the 30GB)?

After a couple of reformats and two hours on the phone with apple care, I realized that my ipod was coming up as full after syncing for just a short while because the battery was low! It's probably only a PC thing since the mac version charges with the firewire... so, anyone with an ipod for Windows, if it says the ipod's full while it's syncing and you know it's not, then just unhook it from your computer and let it charge up and it should resume syncing songs.... wish the error message had been correct! I thought there was something wrong with the HDD of my ipod. What a pain! Oh well, at least everything is fine now.

Oh, and the applecare guy had no idea about that. I should call them back and let them know what the problem was. They never were able to fix it. I figured it out after downloading ephpod and it syncing for like and hour and then dying and realizing the battery was exhausted. Syncing seems to really drain the battery.

:D
