I have a couple of the old ones running oe, so they are still ok to use, not the best but doable! On the original Apple TV I know you can. Not sure on newest ones.
Just get a fire stick and sideload kodi.
Why not just use a raspberry pi 2? http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=250817
Yes, this works. You need a developer account (free). The instructions linked above are pretty good. Current Kodi version is a "pre-alpha" of Krypton (v17). It is surprisingly stable - been running it for the past couple of weeks with no crashes to speak of.
