Average income is a misleading number, since a lot of people in rural areas of China are in utter poverty, bringing the average way down.
The target market is not the whole of the 1+ billion people of China. The target market is the middle class and up, with the middle class representing over 30% of the population.
So while the target market in China is a fraction of the overall Chinese population, we are still talking about a number that compares against the entirety of the population of the US of A.
For example, right now, China is the second biggest market in the world for spending on movie entertainment. They are a significantly bigger market than any EU nation or England, despite China’s reputation for bootlegging. The new middle (and upper) class in China is spending money like mad.
