Apple has placed orders with display supplier BOE for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus for the second half of 2023, with the supplier potentially overtaking Samsung as the iPhone's largest display provider by 2024.

Writing in his Medium blog, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says BOE has beaten Samsung for orders for the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, and that by 2024, BOE will start mass shipments of high-end LTPO displays for the iPhone, making it the largest display supplier.
BOE has beaten Samsung and secured most 2H23 new iPhone 15 and 15 Plus display orders. If development and production proceed smoothly over the next few months, BOE will become the largest display supplier for the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, with a market share of around 70% (compared to Samsung's 30%).

BOE is expected to start mass shipments of LTPO displays for high-end iPhones in 2024, with Samsung and LG Display also being suppliers. If BOE can obtain orders for 20–30% of the 2H24 high-end iPhone LTPO displays and maintain a market share of around 70% for 2H24 low-end iPhone displays, then BOE will likely become the largest supplier of displays for the new iPhone in 2H24.
BOE has had unsuccessful attempts in the past to become a more prominent player in Apple's supply chain after reportedly failing product validation tests. Until now, Samsung has been Apple's largest display supplier, including for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which required more advanced manufacturing thanks to the pill-shaped display cutout.

I never get tired of writing this, but the iPhone Pro needs some serious improvements to the ultra-wide and telephoto cameras (especially the former)...
It's no use to have all these options if the quality gap between those and the main camera is abysmal, especially now with the 48MP upgrade to the main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro.
The ultra-wide would offer some amazing creative opportunities for video, but the quality is horrible, even with some decent light...

Eww! Why would anyone pay a premium price for a phone with inferior components? Samsung or LG are the only screens that should be used.

I'll reserve judgment until it has been tested in the wild.

Although i'm unlikely to be affected. I'm not buying a non-Pro unless there is a Mini.

I would rather have last year's Samsung / LG panels than next year Chinese panels. Apple needs to wake up and stop expecting a 40% gross margin to satisfy Wall Street.
Why do you have such a problem with display panels out of China? Don’t you think Apple holds all of their suppliers to a hard spec regardless of cost? We saw this just last year when a supplier tried to deviate — think of the cost of losing this contract. I expect BOE to surpass expectations as a way of deepening the relationship.

Seems like the speculations about price reduction for regular models is true. Using BOE instead of Samsung, Apple could certainly reduce the overal price of the device.

I just hope they know their audience, me personally? I wouldn't buy anything inferior. And nobody can beat Samsung/LG in terms of display quality. Not yet anyway.

What have we learned about chinese quality? What have we learned about supply dependence from china?

Sounds like Apple is cutting corners on quality this year.

At least the high-end models are still Samsung/LG.
It's funny - I remember around 15-20 years ago forums were filled with this kind of comment around TVs and not wanting a TV with a trash "Korean" panel when the Japanese panels were so much better. BOE (and any other Chinese supplier) will need to pass Apple's QC and specifications and the future for the mainstream is likely going to be Chinese displays.

Your comparison is off.
Korean LCD display panels were on par/superior to Japanese ones almost from the start, whereas Chinese never been superior to Korean panels not even on par as of now.
Apple is doing this simply to cut costs/increase profit.

Yes, because they proved themselves, let's get back on this in 15-20 years and see if BOE is better than Samsung, because right now, it's not and I wouldn't want displays from them in my calculator not to mention my very expensive phone.

And that nonsense that China will produce everything and will excel in everything is proving to be a complete BS already. They are good at manufacturing stuff other nations designed and developed but not designing and developing their own products.

Do you not think that Apple has a clear standard that any partner has to meet? Do you think they will accept anything less than their spec? Supply dependence on anyone from anywhere is not wise. I don’t think depending on displays from Samsung is smart considering they are a strong competitor in the same categories.
