All I want is to have FaceTime on my tv — sit on the couch and FaceTime with family like they're across the room

Instead of buying a whole new speaker for this, here's the dirt cheap way to do it now: https://www.howtogeek.com/344324/how-to-facetime-on-your-apple-tv/

Effectively, in this approach, your phone or tablet (or MB) becomes a temporary, bottom "notch" for your TV screen.

However, a dedicated way would for Apple to roll out an original iSight-like camera to put on top of any TV and make the rest work through AppleTV or perhaps entirely via Airplay.

Obviously, it would no longer have to be THAT large but the idea is very much a MB-like 4K or 1080p camera with a little adjustable "lip" to clamp onto the top of ANY TV bezel.

Try searching for TV webcam or Skype webcam for TV and you'll see tons of modern incarnations of this idea. What do they NOT offer? Locked down FaceTime. But Apple could fix that easily enough.

Ah, well Citysnaps has declared these features are useless, therefore none of us can have them. Drat.
Well, no surprises here.
He is used to mocking the posts of those who do not follow his line. Try searching for "Juvenile" in his posts and you will understand the character.
He's also the same one that hailed the sound of the original HomePods months before they were on the market.
Try searching for "beamforming" in his posts.
Embarrassing.

Maybe I missed it as a suggestion but Homebar would be good. A sound bar with the same features and external sub. Combine what I need for TV playback and smart speaker in one. I realize you can connect HomePod now but if they are in a stereo pair you miss the center channel that makes the voices feel realistic.

HomePod the worst advertised product from Apple. A product that luanch unfiinished. If Stereo Pair with ATV Entertainment center mode was launched with the original homepod I think it would still be an active product. No one wanted to invest $600 into speakers that ONLY worked with Apple Devices. Now with ATV E mode I can use my homepods with xbox, blueray, TV, etc. They also sound great and they also have decent spacial audio. The spacial audio was also not well explained in the ads.

There is a center cannel. HomePods do it with spacial audio. If you stand in the middle of my homepods in ATV E mode you can hear the center channel from the beam forming speakers. The Atmos setup with stereo mode is like a 3.1.2 Atmos system. Sometimes HomePod Spacial has a 5.1 effect, but I think it all depends on the media being played.

Kuo and Gurman are wrong more often than they are correct, so I wouldn't read anything into their guesses, which is all they are...

Apple will never get my money on a HomePod or mini or any other speaker system until they give it an HDMI port and allow it to be used directly by a TV (not the ATV). Otherwise it will be a pathetic wireless POS with extremely limited capability. Same goes for Amazon and their Echo Studio.

If it sounds at least as good as the originals with more volume, I'm totally in. If it is just marginally better than the minis? No interest.

Currently have 8 OGs thru the house and some minis. Would love more OGs.

You can connect one or two HomePod speakers to Apple TV 4K to enjoy room-filling stereo sound. When you set up a second HomePod as a stereo pair, you get true stereo sound and a more immersive sound stage for your home theater.

Note: HomePod (2018) provides Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1, and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound for your home theater. Apple TV 4K doesn’t support home theater sound on HomePod mini.
If you have an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), you can play audio on your HomePod speakers from devices such as DVD players or game consoles that are connected to a supported TV with an HDMI cable. For more information, see Set up Apple TV.

Before you start, make sure you’ve assigned a room to your Apple TV. Your HomePod (or HomePod stereo pair) must be connected to the same network and set up in the same room as your Apple TV 4K using the Home app on an iOS, iPadOS, or macOS (Catalina or later) device.

For more information on setting up HomePod, see the HomePod User Guide.

  1. Open Settings
    Settings
    on Apple TV 4K.
  2. Go to Video and Audio > Audio Output, then select the HomePod (or HomePod stereo pair).
Note: This setting routes all sound, including navigation clicks, from Apple TV to your HomePod. Only HomePod speakers can be selected for default audio output and home theater sound. If you temporarily select other speaker options (such as HomePod mini or other wireless speakers), home theater sound and navigation clicks are not supported and your speaker selection resets after Apple TVis put to sleep.
If you use a HomePod stereo pair, place the speakers on either side of the TV.

For the best surround sound, place HomePod (2018) within 10 inches of a wall and as close to the center of your TV as possible. For optimal surround sound, the HomePod speakers should be about 4 feet apart from each other.

You can use the speakers with everything now. Just need to enable ARC port on ATV.

They sent out a survey to owners of the big HomePod a few months ago asking what we liked/didn't like about the product.

My biggest wish item was a simple 3.5mm input - I'd be much more inclined to just dock an iPod next to it and let it play local music than I am to try to AirPlay something to it. And for the price and 'premium range' they were going for, I feel like that's not a big ask.
You know what - that would be cool. Might go for one. And if it could have USB A I could plug my old iPod cables in …. Nah too much

Probably asking too much, yeah. ?

I've still got multiple 30-pin docks with audio out though, so I'd just use those.

I’ll believe it when I see it, considering they cancelled the first one due to low sales. Not sure what can be added to the current model.

I have no idea how well the original HomePod sold, and whether that level of sales justified keeping the product in the lineup, but the simple fact that used ones consistently sell on eBay for at least as much as the original list price--usually more--indicates pretty strongly that the product has fans and there's at least some continuing market for it.

My general rule of thumb is that if a discontinued product is selling for at or above its original price on the secondary market over a year after it went off sale, then there's clearly a need that's not being met.

I remember when my old Logitech MX Revolution broke years after the product was discontinued; used ones cost more than Logitech's replacement product, and when I bought the replacement I understood why. Not saying it didn't make business sense for them to cancel the product, but from a user perspective the "new" model was worse than the old one.
