Snark on if y'all must, but I don't upgrade every year like some do. I have an aging iPhone 11 Pro and am looking forward to making the jump to an iPhone 14 Pro. My only complaint likely will be the squared-off frame, as I much prefer the rounded edges of the earlier models like my current devices (I also have an iPad Air 3)

Here a 11 Pro user too. Looking forward to upgrade to the 14 Pro this year. 5G, LiDAR, ProMotion, enhanced camera capabilities, no more notch, better battery and hopefully a new wireless audio chip for lossless streaming ✌🏽.

They’re going to make a new iPhone model every year no matter what because those with 5-6 year old iPhones HAVE to upgrade.
That’s who these new iPhones are for: those running really old devices. And for them (iPhone 6 users) it’s a HUGE upgrade.

The iPhone 14 Max (non-Pro) with upgraded front camera, upgraded rear camera, A15, 6 GB RAM, and of course OLED would make for an excellent upgrade to even my wife's XR (single rear camera, A12, 3 GB RAM, LCD), which is "just" four years old. I hope all these rumours are true.

I do hope they back off a bit on the image smoothing though.

I can only hope for a new sensor, because so far the upgrade looks anemic this year.

How much difference is going from f/2.2 to f/1.9 make in terms of bokeh? As a camera guy, on a full frame that's a noticeable difference, but if you go down in sensor size to MFT levels, the difference in bokeh between f/2.2 and f/1.9 would be far less pronounced. I don't believe that with the same sensor size a wider aperture is going to make much difference for portraits, it's all going to be software magic.
Nobody said anything about bokeh. That's why Portrait mode exists. They're increasing the aperture so it lets in more light during the night.

I wish so badly it would look like what’s pictured in the OP but we all know it won’t have flat cameras. That’s a shame because it’d be an amazing design.

If the iPhone 14 really does not have the updated design AND does not have the A16 chip AND does not have the updated rear cameras...I can't imagine how they will actually spin this as a new phone. If anything they should lower the price on it by $100. But you know Apple won't do that.
Judging by these "some iPhones 14 won't get a lot of new features" style rumors, I speculate that Apple will still do a 14 Pro Max, 14 Pro, 14 "Standard" all featuring the expected A16 chip and regular spec bumps as we're use to see from new iPhones.

But as something new this year, they'll do another "Standard" iPhone 14 that at the very least keeps the A15 and maybe a few other iPhones 13 specs but is then priced at $699 like iPhones mini, or maybe even a little less than $699.

So it's a sort of mix of iPhone 13 and 14 standard and thus comes in at slightly lower price.

An iPhone 14 Max with A15 would sell like gangbusters. It would VASTLY outsell the iPhone 14 Pro Max with A16.

Who would have thought a decade later we’d have four cameras on an iPhone?
The original iPhone was correct with one camera. With today’s technology we can return to one camera that can even be used for both front and back using mirrors.

I mean.. I think we should be done with the camera for now ya? Lets focus on literally ANYTHING else Apple.

So according to Kuo the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max or whatever will just have an upgraded front camera. They will have the same size notch, same back cameras, same processor, same design as the iPhone 13s. If that is the case the iPhone 14 is not worth it and it would probably better to buy the 13 at a $100 discount.
Get used to it.
The iPhone is almost 15 years old, The lifecycle of a phone is getting longer and longer, people are upgrading their phones less and less frequently (Last I saw it had Move from the average upgrade being every 2-2.5 years to every 3-4 years and that was in 2019).
Just like there’s no reason to upgrade a Mac every year, the iPhone is going in that direction.
If you’re upgrading from an 11 or earlier, especially if you’re upgrading from a 8 or 7, the 14 will be nice.
Upgrading from a 12 or 13 is absolutely unnecessary.
That’s what happens when a product reaches maturity

these camera upgrades could result in an improved depth-of-field effect for Portrait mode photos and videos, while autofocus can enhance focus during FaceTime and Zoom video calls

Portrait mode is a software feature and has nothing to do with focus.

A tech site would know the purpose of a focusing lens is NOT to enhance focus. It actually makes the focus worse for some parts of the image. Its primary function is to support a much wider aperture that captures more light.

Well, there have been years where the camera was minimally updated or not at all, also not everybody has last year's iPhone, many are looking to upgrade from older phones. So, this is still worth reporting.

I am just looking forward to periscope zoom, better low light performance, and astrophotography.
These were the best years. The years when we got the phone 5 and touch ID and real innovation. All the while, the camera worked perfectly fine.

The cameras now are just out of control absurdity.

Actually since they’re getting rid of the mini in the new lineup, I think they might.
14: $729
14 Max: $829
Then the 13 series will just be completely discontinued, and the 12 Mini and 12 can stick around at $499 and $599
Important to remember the 14 won’t be the big story this year.
All of the marketing, all of the promotion, everything is going to be on the 14 Max.
First 6.7 inch iPhone that doesn’t start at $1100.
First mainstream huge iPhone.
That’ll be how they spin it.

Yes I agree. Also I really wonder how Apple is going price the new iPhones and how much price cut are they ging to give to the older ones.
The current prices are:
  1. iPhone SE - $429
  2. iPhone 11 - $499
  3. iPhone 12 Mini - $599
  4. iPhone 12 - $699
  5. iPhone 13 Mini - $699
  6. iPhone 13 - $799
Ignoring the prices of the Pros since Apple always discontinues them.

The expected prices when the iPhone 14 releases:
  1. iPhone SE - $429
  2. iPhone 11 - Discontinued
  3. iPhone 12 Mini(5.4inch) - $499?
  4. iPhone 12(6.1inch) - $599?
  5. iPhone 13 Mini(5.4inch) - $599?
  6. iPhone 13(6.1inch) - $699?
  7. iPhone 14(6.1inch) - $699/799?
  8. iPhone 14(6.7inch) - $799/899?
Since keeping the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 at the same price would not be beneficial to Apple and it would probably cannibalize the iPhone 14 since both are exactly the same size just that the iPhone 14 will have a better front camera. And also it doesn't make sense. So Apple will probably price the iPhone 14 a $100 higher. But who is gonna get the iPhone 14 for $100 extra just because it has an upgraded front camera?
This is why Kuo's rumor doesn't make sense. An upgraded chip can compensate for the extra $100 but just an upgraded front camera can't.

I don't know how Apple is going to price their upcoming lineup and if you guys have any thoughts about it please let me know.
Entire 13 series will disappear.
SE: $429
12 Mini: $529
12: $629
14: $729
14 Max: $829
Keeping me exact same processor, design, and specifications as last year is how they’ll lower the price of the regular 14.
It’ll literally just be a 13 with a better front camera and probably some new color options or something.
Thee big seller will be that 14 Max.

Just like in 2018 with the XS, it was barely different other than a better processor and a couple other things. The big story was the XS Max

Dont you think they will keep the 13 mini in the line up, in place of the 12 mini?

I don’t think so.
If that were the case then the 12 would have to go below the 13 mini, meaning it would have to drop down to $529, and I just don’t think that’s possible.
The 12 going from 699 down to 629 makes complete sense, and seems like something Apple could easily do.
Dropping the 12 mini from 599 down to 529 also seems like something Apple could easily do.
Them dropping the 12 from 699 down to 529, just so they can keep the 13 mini around at 629, just doesn’t make sense to me.
Also the new SE battery life matches closer to the 12 Mini than the 13 Mini.
So I think that’s how they’ll do it. The smallest phones with the worst pretty much identical battery life are both the cheapest at 429 and 529 respectively
