I couldn't care less about the screen, but I would like Apple to make a bigger HomePod to compete with the Sonos Era 300.

What I want is an Apple TV that acts like a homepod - so it can play music to the real sound system instead of a tiny speaker. Bonus points if it'll connect to my local library.

What I don't need is an iPad glued to a speaker.

So you need an Apple TV glued to a speaker?

I have four kids in the third and sixth grades. We don't want to get them individual phones or tablets, but we want them to have access to email and calendars and reminders, and to be able to FaceTime their friends. They also like to play music (currently they use an OG HomePod to play something called "phonk" which they claim is music).

If this device can recognize them by face or voice and then give them access that's customized to them, then I'll probably get one. Or maybe more than one. I'm waiting to see whether what Apple says this is comes close to what I want.

Long shot. Maybe some actual useful features by 19.3? Or 20? Apple is a big lying company that wants to change the narrative on how they failed so badly with AI then they made promises and sold 100m iPhones that can’t do what is advertised. It’s flat out wrong. I see a massive class action law suit where Apple pays at least $300 per iPhone 16 to buyers who bought it. I think they should offer a return right now to let people get their money back and would save a fortune long run in the bad will they have created.
I don’t think a lawsuit would go anywhere because Apple said before the phone went on sale that some Apple Intelligence features wouldn’t be available at launch. But putting that aside, $300 is such an absurd over the top number.

This is hardware you'd want to introduce to the market if Siri was mature and reliable enough to support this.

But introducing it now? With a further delayed AI product that lags behind the competition and a voice assistant that is even further behind?

Amazon Echo Show came out in 2017, why enter a market this late in the game?
Well, that's easy! The Amazon Echo Show won't easily show my Apple Email or Apple Notes or Apple Photos or Apple Calendar. And so on, and so forth, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

When I look at the Amazon Echo Show, I start wishing Apple had something like it, but integrated with the Apple ecosystem, so that when I plug it in and turn it on it asks me who I am and then everything in my iCloud is already there.

Huh? What tiny speaker? AppleTV can use any Airplay or Bluetooth speakers, can’t it? Our AppleTV is connected to our Sonos soundbar via HDMI, and further surround speakers can be connected wirelessly to the Sonos.

Works great, sounds great!

That's right, folks, it's time to get stoked for the ALL NEW HomePod. Tim "Supply Chain Master" Cook sure wasn't kidding when he said how strong the pipeline was. This ALL NEW HomePod is now locked it and will enter mass production this summer, meaning the pipeline will be bursting when this thing is released next spring. Apple can't wait to see the incredible things customers do with the ALL NEW HomePod and Apple thinks you're gonna love it. Get ready for a sneak peek at the future of the home. The era of home computing is here!

I think the differentiator here is going to be that this HomePod/iPad combo has Apple Intelligence. It's not going to be things that we already have, this is going to be a very conversational machine that likely will understand commands and write Shortcuts or create Scenes for Apple Home.

$600, sells less than than expected, discontinued two years later and Apple blames "weak demand".

Did I miss anything?

Edit: FWIW Google has already nailed this concept, what we actually need is a HomePod style DOCK, afterall iPads have those smart connectors on the back right?

Dock your iPad magnetically, iPad OS automatically enters 'Home' mode and starts charging the iPad.

Then again I'm not so sure iPad OS is advanced enough to handle such a task
They already tried this a long time ago and it didn’t take off. For a long time iPads could serve as a HomeKit hub but it wasn’t all that feasible since you would need a dedicated iPad that always stays in the house.

I have no idea why this product would exist. My wife and I both have access to everything Homekit on our phones. What's the point of having an automated, connected system if you have to walk to another part of the house to turn devices on or off in the part of the house you're in? And if you need this to be stationary, just buy an iPad Mini and dedicate it to that use. But this? Makes zero sense to me.

Meanwhile while Apple figures out that whole mess, my new echo show 21 is absolutely amazing.

You could have this and still use your phones.

Or not have this and still use your phones.

My kids don’t have phones and I don’t want them to have phones until they are a few years older.

So buy your kids an iPad mini they can share. You could even mount it on a wall if that's what you're after. And it will be much more versatile than this device, unless there's something about it I'm missing.

This will fail hilariously. There’s a few people on this forum that are insane Apple dweebs who will get this but…??? They need to update the HomePods and minis. And make a surround sound type system with them so you can use 4 or more at once via Apple TV and whatnot.

So a gimped iPad mini on a stand. Might as well build your own fully featured Apple Home. Just chuck an iPad Pro on a movable magsafe stand. 👍

Should be fun when this lands at WWDC, and Apple tells developers to figure out a killer app and business case for it (i.e Vision Pro).

“Made for Siri Pro Max
Available now*

* Some features will become available in software updates in the coming months.”

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today reiterated his belief that a new HomePod with a screen will enter mass production in the third quarter of 2025.

It is unclear if the home hub will launch in late 2025, or if the delays will push it back until 2026.

I would have read the article with great interest and hope if the headline had been „Kuo: New 'Airport Extreme' With Screen to Enter Mass Production After WWDC“

Hanging screen covering part of the HomePod sound would seem to be counter productive.
Keep in mind that image is the result of some artist/editor throwing together images of existing bits of Apple devices to make a nice image to go with the article. It is almost certainly not what the device Apple releases will look like. They're not dumb enough to slap a screen over the speakers, missing that it blocks the sound - give them some credit. Your beef is with the person who conjured up that image, not Apple.
