That "20%" larger area comes from doubling the cache, and they are not going to do it again anytime soon (A15 has more cache per core than any other apple silicon chip including the ultra).

Rumors indicate A16 performance is up 20% as well. That suggest some kind of significant die area increase.

This would be the first time they ever do something this stupid. I really don't think this is true. At all. This guy has been very wrong lately and has lost all credibility. If Apple started doing this it would seriously piss people off.

Could it be due to chip supply challenges?

No.

There have not been supply issues for leading edge chips. When the pandemic started, it was predicted there would be fewer car sales, which uses older chip tech. Combined with political issues, the available fabs for mature nodes decreased. But everyone knew leading edge chips would be in high demand.

Would regular people even notice if they just slapped an A16 sticker on A15 chips and shipped them like that? I'm sure they'll ship a "new" processor, but it might not be much of an update.
Apple lying like that would be a pretty big scandal. That would bring some juicy lawsuits.

Then what's the point of the regular iPhone 14 If it has the same chip (and therefore features) as the iPhone 13 (which will be $100 less), especially if the design is not drastically changed?

One way this could make sense is if there will only be one iphone 14, a 6.7" version. At least the larger size justifies the extra cost over the iPhone 13.
But that doesn’t offer anything to those of us who would not buy such an abomination.

i supposed Apple could just recycle A15 chips for both the main and pro lines and tell everyone to just suck it up.

As someone who owns a company and also a marketing department, they should just rename the A15 to A16 so it seems like people are getting something new, and then name the A16 like A16 Pro or A17 or something to make those users feel special too. This way everyone wins ?

Nah. The reality is that the chips got powerful enough that the new chips really don't provide much additional value to most of the customers. Now having the latest chip provides longevity and that is very nice. But for most users, if you put a new battery in a used iPhone 8 it would be fine. And the things that user would miss the most would be the better camera. Not how well the chip performs.

I think it makes some sense to start giving customers a choice between a more powerful chip and a less powerful chip. And not forcing the user who has little need for the current best available chip, but might like other phone improvements, to buy more chip than they need or could even use for years to come. Or worse, leave them with only older and completely upgraded phones.
That does make sense, they can only advance a chip so much. Hopefully soon they can make it powerful enough to add AI and make it extremely useful, or pushing forward with AR glasses. This upgrade model isn’t very sustainable to keep customers upgrading year to year anymore.

Yes they do, the regular iPhone 13.
If Apple kept the iPhone 14 with A15, then how is it different than the iPhone 13 other than an extra $100?

I guess Apple can do that and hope people wouldn't notice. It reminds me of the iPad mini 3, which was just the mini 2 with Touch ID, and nothing else.

Just like intel.... ??

That would be odd. What would actually be new in the 14 compared to the 13 then if the recent rumors were accurate? No new design up top for the Face ID components, no new processor.

I get the idea of trying to persuade people to get the Pro models but they surely have to add something to the 14 compared to the 13. Usually it is a processor bump.
I would’ve accepted a very slightly upgraded A16 and a beast of an A16 named A16 pro/ultra/whatever for the pro models. But using the same name? Farfetched. How would you differentiate the iPhone 13 from the 14?

Exactly. iPhone is Apple's main bread and butter, so I doubt they would do a blunder like that.

My guess: it will be as usual, iPhone 14 lineup all with A16. The non-pro models might get less GPU core/lower clockspeed/whatever like the iPhone 13 lineup, but they all get A16.

If supply is an issue, then it's more plausible for Apple to stagger the releases, like what they did with the iPhone 12.

Just a thought — wouldn’t it be interesting if the even-numbered non-pro iPhones got a large Max variant, and the odd-numbered ones got a small Mini?

That would fulfill the rumor that the Mini is done for now, but will still come around for people who want it, just not as frequently.

And the standard middle size is always available, as is the Pro Max for those who just want the biggest thing every time?

What leak(s) did he get "very wrong" lately?

Yep. The chips are getting better, but really only a bit better every year. And partly the limit is the software and, frankly, us the user. We typical want our phones to do two things, show us some words, show us some pictures/video or play us some sounds. Most folks aren't doing much more than that on their phones. And even if you are some sort of "power user" on your phone, 99% of the time even those users are just doing those three things. So if the CPU can deliver the words, sounds and pictures just fine, then the CPU is good enough. If the software the user uses doesn't use the better CPU, it will run the same on the older CPU.

So I could see Apple doing improvements to this year's iPhone that don't need the new CPU, but are still great. Stuff like make the phone lighter. Make it thinner. Give it a better set of cameras. Give it more battery. Lots of users would take any of those four things before they'd take a 10% faster CPU.

I've done the yearly upgrade several times, but I then switched to upgrade every two years. Will I upgrade my 12 mini this Fall? We shall see. I might. But I might also just get a new battery put in it and take it into year three.

I would prefer better hardware, product designs, and software to go along with these new chips. I don't really care how fast the chip is if it does what I need fast and efficient enough. Apple really should think about other ways to market their products and not rely on just the chip.

It's time for Apple to really make iOS, iPadOS and MacOS into something new. It just feels so repetitive and the interface looks and feels old compared to other products out there. I can't be the only one becoming increasingly bored with Apple and their one dimensional product philosophy.

This makes sense. They use the a15 with 6GB (an existing variant) and they eliminate the need for two variants of the a16. The following year everything gets a17 as the battery life improvements will be more evident.

Both MR and 9to5M claim they were able to verify this is really Kuo, but I also doubt it. Someone like him won't just appear on Twitter and start posting stuff, especially Apple related (which we know Apple is always tracking down these people)

I'll only believe it if Tim Cook can vouch for Kuo's "predictions".....

depending on price, and differences between a15 and a16 being nominal and Regular and Pro (120hz, 3rd camera)... the price and weight difference could make a 14 Max really compelling! Like $799 for a 128gb A15 that's got the 12/13 lightness.

Not sure the point in a 'regular' 14 though other than $100 cheaper if it takes the price Point place of 13 mini and 13 is discontinued.

It’s not really Kuo. Unverified account that has been posting ridiculous rumors.

I thought the same when it popped up, but I also feel like Kuo has enough presence in the Apple community to make his voice heard in case he was being blatantly impersonated by now. Especially since your entire reputation lives or dies by what you say in the rumors/leaks game.
