Are people regularly misplacing their bicycle? (shown in pic)

Along with theft, have you ever been to a place with mass bicycle parking, like a college campus or a European train station? It's very hard to find your bike in a sea of similar ones if you forget precisely where you left it.

"Second to third quarter of 2020" could mean anywhere from Dec 29, 2019 to Sep 30, 2020, depending if they are Fiscal or Calendar quarters.

MR should specify whether quarters mentioned are in the Fiscal Year or Calendar Year. Even better, translate its quarters to calendar dates.

Quarters are generally (but not always) used for the Fiscal Year (which for Apple ends on Sep 28, making its 2nd quarter of 2020 running from Dec 29, 2019 to Mar 30, 2020).

As it stands, the timeframe given is impossibly ambiguous.

Having a little tag to tuck into a 3 year old's pocket, plus in each piece of luggage, would've been very useful. So I suspect that Apple will sell a ton of these. Plus the now kindergartener's backpack at school so if it gets misplaced.

And for some elder parents too.

apple's trackers will not replace realtime connected trackers like Jiobit...
they will only work if there's an Apple device nearby.
Right, but they can provide pretty reasonable information if there have been close to an Apple device "recently", and that is a pretty large set of use cases.

Let's be serious. Apple maintains supports for their devices far longer than anyone else

Microsoft offers a minimum of 10 years of support for Windows.

That's only half the story. The other half is vendor support. Vendors like Dell offer usually 3 years of support, then you're on your own with the BIOS, custom drivers, etc. Intel, AMD, Nvidia are all similar; none reach 10 years. For example, Sandy Bridge got graphics drivers for 4 years, and that was it.

Practically this means software lifetime, not hardware lifetime. That is, you buy a new computer on Windows 7, test and port your apps, 3 years later, buy another computer but keep the same apps, then 3 years after that, refresh hardware again, but keep the apps the same.

if they work as well as offline find my iPhone/iPad, it will be perfect for me.
I left my iPad in my car... and minutes later, I got the location... not very precise but still good enough to allow me to find it quickly.

Not even close to correct if you're talking mobile operating systems...

The first modern Windows mobile OS, Windows Phone 7 was released on October 21, 2010. Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2014.

The latest Windows mobile OS to lose support, Windows 10 Mobile was released on March 17, 2016. Microsoft ended support on January 14, 2020.

Both less than four years.

Thats a completely different situation because it’s a whole different world in mobile Apple makes the iPhone Hardware and iOS. The Surface doesn’t run full Windows 10 and certainly not on all models.

The mobile computing hardware Moves faster.

Yes, but Apple did not make this announcement did it? It's still in the "rumour" category right?

I will be buying one for my Vespa Scooter just in case it gets stolen. So far someone has already broken up and stolen its battery last year. The cost of the replacement battery was just 30 Euros but they also cut the wiring and made damage worth of 150 Euros. Idiots. And just last week someone stole the Vespa cover! A 19 Euro cover!

I guess/hope whenever someone with an iOS device comes close enough just for a second it will be enough to have a "last time seen there" tag. Would be enough to find a stolen or lost item.

This will be a hit particularly if you don't need a subscription for them (let alone for each one). We did a long trip with our (then) barely 3 year old and 5 year old last year out of the country and got a Jiobit for each just to provide peace of mind for the spouse. They worked well. The thing is, each requires a subscription, not super expensive, but they add up. Plus there was no way to put it on hold due to the cell networks (per Jiobit). They weren't out of our sight, but of course some people worry about the "what if" scenarios and spending $XX for her peace of mind would be well worth it.

I think you are confusing these with GPS type trackers. They are not that. They are local.
They will not attach to a cell network.
They will tell you when you are leaving something behind, they will help you find something nearby you can find (say, in your house somewhere) and they may, if you are lucky, let you find a rough location if another iPhone user with this service switched on, passes nearby.

if "misplacing" includes bicycle theft, they i would have to say yes...
I don't think this is going to be much of an anti-theft device. For one, you wouldn't be able to "hide" a tag on a bicycle for a thief to leave it to be tracked. Also, I am not sure if you can do a long distance find-my kind of a search?

if there's an up to date Apple device nearby (not only yours... any devices), you are very likely to find the last location when the tag is broadcasting.
This is how it's working with the current implementation of offline Find My with iOS 13... so I guess it will work the same with Apple tags.

well, depending on the size of it, you may be able to - depending on the bike itself :)

my understanding is that you will be able to as long as there are other iphone users in the area. kind of the same way that tile did it, but with apple users the network will be much much larger.

Since it’s Apple it’s probably non replaceable battery and priced high.

Could be.

I think in previous rumours threads I thought I had a good guess of the price - but now with this new Wideband radio talk, maybe it will be >$30 per AirTag.

Whatever - I'm looking forward to this product very much. Apple does often make a compelling value proposition. We can wish for lower prices, but there is really no serious competition for what they release, once they release it. You'll be thinking "Tile and TrackR are way cheaper BUT..." and then you'll realize you'll be much happier with the way Apple is doing it.
