Right. How dare these evil companies to undercut Apple.

After all, Apple only wants to make their customer happy, and does not care one bit about profits and CEO salaries.

Oh, and let's not forget, Apple is donating the little profit they made on the most "underfunded" disease of all -- HIV/AIDS: http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0016837 ("NIH Disease Funding Levels and Burden of Disease").

Seriously, why does Apple not donate large amounts of money to Pancreatic Cancer research? Would that not be a good way to honor Steve Jobs?

But I guess, in today's PC-crazed society AIDS research is perceived as more PC...

So you're trying to make an issue out of Apple choosing one charity over another? Petty much?

Better an US ally (South Korea) than an US adversary (communist China).

You do realize that the majority of parts of the iPhone benefit Japan and Germany more than any other company, right? The labor costs are very little, and the profit goes to a US company. Samsung does not manufacture all of its products, either.

Any money made in the US by a Korean company would be taxed in the same method as one from a supposed American company, and dodged just the same as well.

Apple pays a higher percentage of taxes than any US company, not that it has anything to do with where the profits go. Admit it, at this point you're not even trying to think of where the money is going - just to oppose it going to Apple.

Brilliant men and women leading today's world learned using paper pads that cost .99 cents and a printed book.

You mean books...that now cost hundreds of dollars.

The kids lose??? You make it sound as if the iPad is a replacement for a good teacher. I still remember my tough as nails German engineer turned teacher who retired from Motorola in the 80's. That guy was brutal when I first started but after everything was said and done I received an A in that class; that was 17 years ago. I gained that guys respect due to hard work and motivation and I did not need a tablet to do it. I don't even remember the car I was driving but I still remember his name to this day.
We need better teachers; not tablets thrown in front of our kids. Please don't say that kids will lose because to me that's an insult to good teachers around the country who would never use a tablet as a primary teaching tool.

Face it, the state doesn't want to pay teachers more so you will not get better teachers. If you have to choose between the state buying chrome books and iPads, at least pick the ones that have more value. After all, they're paying either way.

----------

And I like the fact the chrome book doesn't have any security workarounds that the students can exploit:D

No security workaround??? It's an internet laptop. The amount of security issues these chrome books will have is a limitless as the internet itself.

I feel bad for the kids, knowing they have to put up with those crappy notebooks. And its not as if they won't be able access restricted content on those. I think that will always be an issue. Oh well, at least I can sleep at night knowing they aren't putting Windows R/T's in their hands

With Wikileaks founder saying that Google is working for the state department, FBI getting mad at Apple over encryption, and this. It's starting to sound slot like US GOV vs Apple. And the GOV (and Google) are pulling all the stops into slicing Apple with lawsuits and undercutting products.

Sad world.

Looks like Google's lobbying efforts are paying off.... They're outspending all their tech peers by a mile. They barely got a slap on the wrist for the Safari hack and the DOJ basically said Google wasn't abusing its monopoly in search to hurt competition even though there's strong evidence to the contrary.

US tax dollars should be spent on Korean products? No thanks.

vast majority of the products americans spend their money on is made in China or some other asian country anyways. So that's a hypocritical statement.

Are you serious? You can have healthy food that taste amazing! No wonder so many kids these days are overweight.

Yes, and the food in many school cafeterias across the US is neither healthy nor tasty. As a result, kids either bring their own lunches or throw most of the school food away.

Better spend US tax dollars on made-in-China-products, right?

Since almost no "complex" product (electronics, cars, etc) is totally made in a unique country, your comment is pointless.

Yeah, but sad or not, the only thing that matters is who sells the product under his name/brand, not who really did it. Ask it to the ghost writters or ghost producers...
There is just the exception of food (wines, cheese, pork derivates...) which the denomination of origin matters: that means who did it and where it was made. Otherwise, people won't give a ***** if something was made in China, Taiwan or USA, they will only care if it has a bright apple as a logo.

Hmm.... 1. Steve Jobs was very passionate about AIDS research and it honors that legacy.
2. Pancreatic cancer affects a very small number of people, and preventing any cancer is somewhat connected.
3. You're probably one of those idiots who thinks it's a gay disease and are at the highest risk of getting it because of said iggnorance or do not know that woman are 90% more likely to contract hiv than a gay male.
4. Apple does a lot of charity... and the red line generates most of the money donated.

What happens when the student loses or breaks his iPad? What if the family doesn't have the money to replace it? It sounds like too much responsibility for a kid. Taking care of a band instrument is hard enough.

No, because that is not what Steve would have wanted, Steve Jobs died because he turned his nose up at conventional medicine and turned to alternative methods, and unsurprisingly he died. But it was his choice, he was adult enough to make it.

As for the article, it does seem rather obvious this would happen, a massive amount of money like that and a guy who loves Apple running it, yeah kinda only going to go one way really. But it does seem a ridiculously large sum even for a bunch or iPads? Will be interesting to see what the FBI turns up.

But it is a shame for the children, they are the real losers as tablets can help their education, then again they should spend a lot more time in the library too, oh and outside in the fresh air playing.

Or it could just be that both in the US and the rest of the world the incidence of HIV and AIDS is much, much greater than the incidence of Pancreatic Cancer?

AIDS is (easily) avoidable *. (Pancreatic) Cancer is not.

* except in case of a crime (rape), but that is an issue of crime-prevention, not an issue of scientific research.

No. But I am offended that AIDS/HIV research gets so much research money -- even though it is entirely preventable (i.e. I know with 100% certainty that I will never get AIDS, but I am quite certain that I will get a form a cancer sooner or later -- and there is nothing I can do about it).

Did you read the article I quoted? Are you not offended?

Unless there is substantial amounts of data to show that having each child with an electronic tablet will result in better student learning, engagement, and test scores, then we should not be pushing toward this.

Just watch "The Cartel" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1433001/). There is no correlation or causation between spending more money per student, and better learning outcomes/results.

Why do you think I care whether or not Apple gets money? If they have the best product, they should get the contract. If they don't have the best product for the money, they shouldn't. I was simply stating that the country of origin doesn't matter.

Really? You got all that from just a few words?

No. The iPad is just a good replacement for a lousy chrome book.

I still remember my tough as nails German engineer turned teacher who...
Why pick my post to piggy back your dissertation down memory lane? If you're over 50, I've heard it all before. The rant about "kids these days!" It never changes.

What happens when the student loses or breaks his iPad? What if the family doesn't have the money to replace it? It sounds like too much responsibility for a kid. Taking care of a band instrument is hard enough.

Hmm, are you aware that instruments cost FAR more than iPads?

Are you joking?

You guys need to work on comprehension. Yes, of course it was a joke, hence the emoticon indicating such. The joke is that there is no security whatsoever, so no "workarounds" are necessary or available. Geez....
