Don't let your phone run out of power. From the FAQ:

Question: What if my device battery dies before a transit enforcement officer checks my fare?
Answer: A transit enforcement officer may issue you a citation if your fare payment cannot be validated. Plan ahead to ensure your device is charged.

Oyster is a CTS backend like LA, SF, Sydney, Paris etc. CTS announced that all CTS based transit cards are going to be in Apple Pay eventually.
Elon Musk announces complete autonomous is coming eventually too (seemingly at each quarterly earning call)... but that doesn't make it any more of a reality to be expected anytime soon (next ten years).

Companies say these things all the time, but they're often meaningless, as either the tech itself or more often simply transport authority policy stops such things happening.

In the case of Oyster, TfL are limited to 15 zones with the system: it's only 4-bit, thus 15 zones max. Hence wanting to phase it out eventually in favour of simple contactless card (or via smartphone) usage, due to them wanting the London system to expand beyond that 15 zone limit – what with the new (forever delayed) Elizabeth Line, and things like HS2, et al. ticketless systems – along with the cost savings of not having to run ones own card (Oyster) system.

From 1:55:

Where this leaves season/discount-type Oyster users, and pensioner Freedom Pass users, is anyone's guess.
