Label template for irregular bottle

Hi All,

Does anybody know how to create a template for a label on a very irregularly shaped bottle? I have the technical drawing of the bottle itself with the label area specified, but we can't figure out how to turn that into a 2D model.

The label itself with still be cylindrical and your design will need to accommodate the areas where the label will shrink when it is wrapped.

I would suggest drawing guides across where the "bends" are, and avoiding any pertinent art work there, especially text. And be aware that any artwork on the shrunken are will be slightly reduced in size and somewhat squeezed together.

Thanks for your reply. The label will only cover the area marked "label area", so I'm not too concerned about areas shrinking. As you mentioned, it'll be cylindrical. The main problem for us is rendering the curves at the top of the label area.

I see. I have only seen this done with accuracy working backwards from a 3D model, much like is done with a globe. I wonder if you could rotate a 3D model in illustrator based on the schematic you provided, map a simple label, and unwind that label into a 2D, flat image?
