Looking for some advice, I need to connect a LaCie D2 thunderbolt 3 drive to my late 2015 27in iMac. Ideally I want to do this over thunderbolt but I’m struggling to find a cable to do it. Does anybody with better knowledge than me know if is would be suitable

Thanks in advance

I think the late 2015 27in iMac has TB2 ports.

"This model is equipped with two Thunderbolt 2 ports. Thunderbolt 2 is backwards-compatible with Mini DisplayPort-equipped displays as well as adapters that are compatible with Mini DisplayPort (DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI and HDMI). It also can support other peripherals that use the Thunderbolt 2 standard."

The $49 apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter is designed to connect TB2 devices to TB3 (USBC) but also states that

"As a bidirectional adapter, it can also connect new Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port and macOS Sierra or later."

Dunno, haven't used one in this way. But it takes more than a simple cable to connect up storage devices. There is some circuitry involved.

So you would plug the adapter into the D2 and use a standard TB2 cable between the adapter and iMac, not a display port cable.

The Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter is what you need. You will also need a regular Thunderbolt cable to go from the adapter to your iMac.
A DisplayPort cable will not work.

Thanks for that. Couldn’t find a straight answer anywhere so I appreciate your help. Didn’t realise how expensive the Apple adapter 😮. Think I’ll connect via USB 3 and see how I get on.
