I have an old Lacie 250 GB external 'Big Drive' that is a number of years old and I would like to get a new WD Caviar Black 1Tb to put into it. My thought is that the old drive itself is likely what would fail before the chipset/enclosure itself, right? So it looks like I have a nice FW800/400 and USB2.0 enclosure to drop the new drive into.

But I also don't know if the chipset itself might not support drives as spacious as 1tb. Any thoughts on that? I also need to open it up to confirm the internal connection is SATA and not PATA.

I have an empty slot in an OWC Mercury eSATA enclosure, but it doesn't have any other connections for connecting to my non eSATA equipment, which is why I thought I'd try the Lacie enclosure.

    Anyone think this will work?

My money is on the old drive/enclosure being PATA.

Yup. I just checked, and it is PATA. Total bummer, cause it would have been nice to have all those interfaces until I can purchase a new enclosure. Oh wells.
