I received a Lacie external HD. There was currently data on it, so I went to disk utility to wipe it, It started to do it, but it stopped and said imput/output error, and couldn't complete. Now I can't partition or anything. Disk Utility does see the HD, but I can't format and create a volume. I even tried zero all data, but didn't work. Does anyone know what I can do about this? Is there another program you recommend that can do the job. The drive is almost new, so it can't be bad yet. Any suggestions? Thank You

Sounds bad to me. Try hooking it up to some other computer, a winXP with partitionMagic on it and partition it there. If that doesn't work or you have the same problems, the drive is most likely farked.

The Lacie can be tempermental. Try another machine and other utilities. Are you using a intel based Mac or otherwise? Sometimes a lengthy rest gets my Lacie back on its feet.

I have a 17" Powerbook Power PC. Can Disk Warrior or Norton System Works work for that?

    In your head.
Lacie drives have been fine for me, and I have a lot of them- all refurbs.
This said, when they go, like any other product, they are gone. Lemons are made by all manufacturers.

Check the cable, a loose connection can kill any Firewire connection.

    In a house.
I own 2 Lacie drives and they have been great. But the 1st one I bought was no good and had to return it. If it is returnable, I would go ahead and do it. I wouldn't spend much time trying to fix a HD that sounds dead anyway.

LaCie makes excellent drives...good choice! Sounds like you have a lemon though :( Take it back and get another one if you can't use it with a Windows machine either.

My LaCie hard drive came with a busted power supply. It actually still worked, it's just that the black plastic shell was broken so I taped it back together. They sent me a replacement as soon as the holidays were over, so everything's swell!

I too just had my lacie fail. Good thing it is under warranty though. :)
For you, I'd check that connection. It's possible it could be that.
