Well, you interpret it as you wish. ;)
No interpretations in my mind. Pretty cut and dried according to the article.

If she had died from the fall resulting from the initial impact, the article would have stated that. Instead, the article clearly states she was killed by the initial impact.

A little further down in the article, referring to the impact between the ray and the woman, the doctor stated:

"The force of that impact was dramatic," he said.

Pretty darn clear to me. :)

Actually, the bit you quote reads in full:

She was not stung by the ray. The collision knocked Zagorski backward, onto the floor of the boat, Pino said.

"The force of that impact was dramatic," he said.

Along with this bit from the original article:

The force of the blow pushed the woman backward and she died when she hit her head on the boat deck, officials said.

it looks like the injuries were likely caused by the impact between her head and the deck, not the ray and her head. Anyhow, it's irrelevant really - she's just as dead either way.

Yes, my original post was about her death, and the history of the accident.

I just cannot imagine how the parents feel.

very tragic about that little girl. I don't know if your link was a recent one, but she just died this past week :( She had spent most of the time since that accident in the hospital and had an intestine or related area transplant and it rejected.

Before we had kids, I'd hear of a kid dying and would be sad, but it's nothing like the overwhelming sadness and fear I realize now that I have 2 boys.

And one of them is 6 so I know, in a sense, of what that little girl was like ie. fav tv shows, grade 1 work, bday parties.

so sad....

That is awful, my best wishes to her family.

It should be noted that she was not killed by the ray, but instead was startled by it and fell backwards, hitting her head on an object. The death was cause by the traumatic impact.

Uh, where did you get this idea?

Here are some references if you would like to learn what really happened:

Reference B (News video)

Guys, I know it is hard to believe, but if your head is traveling at 25 mph and is struck by a heavy object, which in this case weighed 75 pounds, that is also traveling at some speed (enough to get airborne out of the water in this case) there is going to be significant impact damage (Blunt Force Trauma), and in this case resulted in a tragic accidental death.

how odd...it seems like the chance of something would have to be almost 1 out of 1 million...what an unusual way to pass away

As horrible as this was, and as depressed and deeply sorrowful as a story like this makes me for this family...I have to be honest...When I was at work and I just heard on the radio "A woman was killed when an eagle ray jumped from the water and smashed her in the head." I kind of laughed a bit, because, seriously, when does this happen? I don't laugh because she died, but the event itself is just so random...Anyways sorry if that sounds horrible, it really is a sad thing, it's just one of those things that makes you go..."wow."
