What settings do you use in WoW?

Also, you could insert your original DVD from the computer, hold down "D" on startup to run diagnostics.

Your computer should be a lot faster.

Also, when using your laptop at home with a AC adaptor. Take the battery out when playing the game, its easier on those models than the brand new ones now.

Do not do this, it is stupid to do for gaming as it cuts your computer's power in half, and Apple strongly advises agaisnt this for various reasons.

I don't want to sound snarky but, this was mentioned a few times the posts following that comment.

What is GPU? and what if it is gpu failing, what can i do?
Graphic Processing Unit. If it's failing, there's nothing you can do about it. Apple extended the warranty on those MBP's as they have a bunk GPU which invevitably starts to fail, if you're within 3 years of the date of purchase, Apple will replace your whole logic board(which contains the GPU, amongst other things) for free.

You should try to learn a bit more about the tools you use(as in your computer), it'll help you not get screwed over when you buy things for it or upgrade it. Buying RAM from best buy is probably the most expensive place to buy from, apart from Apple itself which charges an arm and a leg for it.

You should order it online at newegg.com, crucial and OWC makes good quality RAM. You need 2(that's two) 2GB sticks of DDR2 SDRAM. If you're confused shoot them an e-mail or call them, they'll be glad to send you a link to the correct model(s) you're looking for.

With that said, RAM is very easy to replace, if you know which end of a screwdriver to hold, you know how to change RAM. It's as simple as that.

How do I know its my GPU failing?

and i bought my mbp around march-april in 2008 I believe?

Slowing down very badly under load is certainly possibly related to memory. My spouse and I have roughly-matching spec macbooks, and they're both fine under light load, but under heavy load, the one with 2GB of memory turns into a slideshow, and the one with 4GB of memory is just slow.

Did the apple hardware test this is what i got:

Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error.

4vdc/1/40000003: VideoController.

what does that mean? also i ran the test only once, i clicked test one. does that only test one portion of my mbp or all?

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store. Your 8600 GT graphics card has failed; a very common problem with your model of MacBook Pro. They will replace the entire logic board free of charge and you'll be in good shape afterwards.

what's the logic board?

and how long will the repair/fix take?

don't i just get a new mbp?

Google could have answered 90% of your questions.

Repair time depends. If they have the part in stock it will take a few hours. If they have to order it then it'll take a few days. No, they won't just replace your entire computer.

lol yeah i did some reason a lot of people have that error to , and i know what a logic board is now.

you sure they will cover the repair cost for free? can i make an appointment to get it fixed, and get them to order the stock, and then once they get the stock i bring it to the genius bar and they repair it within hours?

If you have AppleCare, they'll definitely fix it, if you don't, they might anyway because the 8600 overheating was such a common problem.

yeah i got apple plan

whats the best way to do this? call them and make an appointment and ask them to have the stock ready so it can be fixed in a few hours? is there another faster way?

Id be willing to bet that its a ram problem. When im playing I notice a big slowdown when i have itunes and safari open along with wow. I would sometimes get 1 or 2 fps when in northrend. I downloaded a ram clearing app and it helped alot. I would upgrade to 4GB ram if I were you.

They would replace it regardless of AppleCare because the failure rate on these units, as acknowledged by nVidia, is much higher than normal as a result of a design flaw.

Just make the appointment and bring it in. There's no faster way. Either they'll have the part or they won't. If they don't have it in stock they aren't going to order it for you without seeing the machine themselves first.

Yes, I've repaired mine twice, and I just had to show them the error code, then they ordered a new logic board and then they exchanged it within an hour.
(It took about one week for them to get the logic board)

That happened to me two days ago. I visited my apple store today, and since I've repaired it several times already apple has offered to replace it with a MBP Core i5! I just came home a few hours ago, very happy :D I have to wait a few days to get the new one, and now I'm backing up whatever I can.

I hope you're not a betting man...

Why do you keep asking questions that have been answered by other people in this thread already? Have you not read the link that's been posted twice already?

No, same programs, but new CPU, graphics etc.
When you hand it in for service, always do a backup, with swapping logic board you shouldn't loose your stuff, but better safe than sorry..

A kinda lame comparison, but imagine they would replace the engine and gearbox for your car, you'll still have a dent on your bonnet (if you had one) and the same junk between the seats and in the trunk :D
