I would suggest you do the following:

Take Logic Board from 15" iMac and install in 17" one with broken LB. You should then have a nice working machine and a decent upgrade of screen for your trouble.

Then take the remains of the 15" and get a standard laptop panel, if it were me I'd probably go for a 1400 x 1050 15" but you could also go a 1024 x 768 (same as standard - pretty low res) or 1280 x 1024 or even 1600 x 1200. Then you'll need a controller to convert the lvds signal to vga/dvi. The iLamp does not use standard lvds, you will need a display with a single channel lvds connector. Most only do up to 1280 x 1024 but I have seen some that do 1600 x 1200. After that figure out how to stuff the MacMini into the casing (I'm pretty sure I've seen it done - check macmod.com). There are also some folks out there whom have figured out how to get 1 x 3.5" SATA + 2 x PATA drives working off a Mini.

All these things are easily do-able with a bit of waiting (for the right opportunity) and a bit of planning ahead. Another simpler option is to get a hold of a standard 15" LCD monitor and gut it and use all the components from that in the iMac (should be easy enough) which will be cheap (15"ers aren't worth that much) and has all the controllers, power etc... for the display. But I'd go the lvds route for the higher resolution - remember a MM can only drive one display, best to make it a good one.

Personally I think you are wasting your time trying to use the existing display - you're in for a world of pain.

Good luck.

iMac

in other words, make it so you could just slide the mini into the front of the lampstand an it would connect to all the ports n whatnot on the iMac, and the screen....

i dunno, but i think its a good idea!

Like The Old PowerBook Duo And The Duo Dock!

NICE But Still I Like The Mac Mini In The G4 Case Permanently Better

Why Not Take Apart The Mac Mini Instead Of Putting The Whole Thing In?

The Only Problem With The Height Would Be Because Of The Slot-Loading Optical Drive, Worst Case Scenario, Make The CD Drive External.

And Of Course, You're Voiding The Warranty Why Not Mod The Thing As Well, Maybe A Better Processor?

OR You Can Cheat By Not Putting The Mac Mini In At All By Just Gutting The Machine And Putting Cable Extenders To The Mac Mini, Then Hide The Mac Mini Somewhere And Put A External CD Drive In The iMac Dome To Make It Look Real (You Would Have To Put Extra Weight In The Dome To Stop It Falling Over Though!)

Hi-

I just bought a 17'' lamp-style G4 iMac with a dead logic board for the screen, with the intent of doing some fun modifications, just because I have some spare time. There are 2 things I would like to ask you all about. If you reply (and all constructive or humorous replies are much appreciated!), keep in mind that I am fairly knowledgeable about electronics and am good at soldering/wiring. Anything I don't know how to do, I have friends that are professional electrical engineers (my day job is working on the ATLAS experiment for the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva). So-

1) I have a perfect, working iMac G4 that has served me well for many years in the same lamp style with a 15'' monitor. Is it possible to gut the 15'' and put it in the 17''? The fit of the components doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to work and be more or less as functional as the current machine. I might be able to build some spacers or something if the fit is not perfect.

2) What do you think the chances are of me stuffing the innards of a Mac Mini inside the 15'' or 17'' chassis? My main concern is the screen connection. I might be able to jury-rig something so that the wires coming from the neck go to a DVI or whatever port is on the Mac Mini to do it that way, I wonder if there isn't a better solution?

Have at it. If I go through with this, I plan to post pictures and a step-by-step account of the process. Thanks!

Oh, and to the people who will undoubtedly bring up copyright/legal infringements....this will not be for sale. Save your breath.

Why is everyone blown away by this idea? This has been debated and tried and such since at least 2006.

That's the main thread holding info on the iMac G4 + Mini idea. No need for this thread to be here. That one's been there for almost 3 years.

Anything thought of here seems to have already been covered there.
