How many past messages do you need to read to reply to someone?

"What are you doing?"

How much of that conversation to you need to see to send a reply?

I will say that the current method may help with distinguishing who is saying what, and possibly help colorblind individuals (the most efficient method would involve overlap).

Then turn the phone upright. Just cause you can use it in landscape doesn't mean it's the only way.

Beejive has always addressed this nicely. While in landscape there is no text bar, just the window with chat. Tap on the window once and the keyboard pops up, your typing shows up in a transparent bubble so you can view more of the chat. Tap on the chat area again and the keyboard goes away.

You know when you enter the text app, and tap the text field, the keyboard scrolls up. Is there an option to tap something for it to go back down?

Yes, tap the Send key.
