This may be weird looking, but it can bend around and might be what you're looking for.

Where exactly would I find one of those? It looks like it would work pretty nice, and no external power source which is also a plus.

I bought an antec cooling pad today. It has two small fans and is powered by a usb cable. The fans aren't very strong though (I'm assuming to keep the noise down) and I'm not convinced that it's doing a whole lot. if anything, it keeps the notebook from boiling my "spuds" when it's sitting on my lap ;)

If I could also run that little "snake fan" thingy (using a USB hub) then I think I might be in business.

On a side note, I talked to a "mac genius" today at the apple store, and she confirmed what was discussed earlier in this thread. the bottom of the MBP is supposed to be hot, because the aluminum is designed to draw heat away from the insides and cool down the unit. The drawback is that the outer case gets extremely hot. She told me that was okay though.

I'm not sure how reliable these "geniuses" are, but it's made me a little less paranoid about keeping it cool.

To be honest this is the first laptop I've ever owned. All I know is that when I use it for more than 10 minutes it gets hotter than a bastard. Almost too hot to touch at all. I began to worry that the insides were going to warp or melt or something. again, I've never owned a laptop before so I'm just going with the "better safe than sorry" approach. I assume my mbp has an internal fan, but I've never heard it running so I really couldn't tell you.

I have heard that the aluminum design is made to suck the heat away from the inside, which would inturn leave the outside very hot.... but it was still concerning me.

Running a fan on it keeps it cool to the touch... and considering that I use it for pretty extensive video editing for 3-4 hours at a time, I figure I'm doing something good to extend the life of the computer.
Yeah, I totally hear you there, but if you haven't already I'd report the problem to Apple and tell them you're having to use an external fan just to keep the thing cool enough to use. It's certainly not 'normal' practice, and having felt some of the MBP's in the Apple store I can assure you that such heat is not something you should just accept.

Hmmm... bizarre... I don't know thing 1 about the inside of computers... is it bad that that stuff is spread on the inside? There must be a reason for it right?

Does anyone know where I can get one of those snake fans?

That stuff is thermal paste, you put it on the cpu so that there is maximum
transfer of heat from the chip onto the heatsink. Your suppose to apply a very
thin layer.

The fan shown is the Kensington FlyFan Compusa, CC, and BB all should have them.

Forgive my ignorance here... should I be concerned about the fact that all of this stuff is on the inside of my computer? I'm assuming it's there for a reason.

Yes, its there for a reason, its to transfer heat, but when applied incorrectly,
it could lead to inadequate transfer and thus build up of heat. From the links
I posted earlier, one said there was no noticeable difference in heat, the other
said there was a difference after correction. I wouldn't be too concerned at
this point, unless your fans on the MBP doesn't turn on.
