Laptop suddenly shrieked like a fire alarm

WTF brothers and sister? I have a MacBook Pro 2010. While I was working on it, something like a fire alarm went off and continued for a while. I was online but I hadn't opened any new windows. Eventually it stopped. Any ideas?
