While Xeon has traditionally meant servers (or desktops that want to be servers), Intel has announced such a brand for mobile devices. Power? Performance? Not clear. But this site says these chips are intended for CAD and computational, not gaming. I can tell you from personal experience (I have an 2 15-in MBPs, a 2013 with GPU and 2014 without. The latter is noticeably less snappy when driving a Dell 2715Q. I believe it's the GPU that matters. FCP and other Apple software seems to be tuned to take advantage of GPU, to an advantage over other software that doesn't.

The mobile Xeon Skylake processors have Intel HD P530 , which has 24 Execution Units, and is capable of driving 3 4K displays simultaneously.
I really do not see a need for more than 3 displays (including the one on the laptop), so I'm confident that this will be fine for pretty much any 2016 or older game.
Intel mentions CAD and scientific workloads, as that is the target market.
I'm confident that certain elements of my scientific processing will be covered by advanced graphics, just as much as advanced processing on Xeon does.

Can the just announced 12" Macbook play back 4K video smoothly?

i think it's worth trying to play your video in VLC http://www.videolan.org/ it may be able to play your 4K files (it's better than quicktime for playback of a lot of files)

if not you can use handbrake to downsize the video to 1080p or 720p which will play back fine on your laptop.

you mention 'noise' without a screen shot it can be hard to tell but id gess thats from the camera or the conversion to 1080p (might be worth trying the high quality preset).

you can also use imovie if you want to downsize your 4k video to 1080p video.

the outer option is to shot 1080p instead of 4K on your ipad

Xeon's are not in laptop's and tend to have server features instead of consumer features so they will have no influence in video playback. if you do consider a newer laptop try your files on it in advance at an apple shop

Thanks. In regard to the "noise". After zooming in, now I can see it on my iPhone 6s+ as well. Imagine shooting a video of a wall and seeing air moving between you and the wall. What is that?

Toshiba is selling a 4K touch screen laptop. Why Apple still has not made one yet? iPhone can shoot 4K videos but no iPad nor Apple laptop has a 4k screen for users to do 4K video editing.

hard to tell without seeing but it may be nose from the camera from iso settings or just that the camera is a tad noisy (it's a iphone not a pro camra so wont be perfect) it may also be compression artifacts from when the camera is saving the video from the h264 encoder or it may be heat haze.

id not let it bother you.

iv got a canon 6D which shoots nice video and i see some noise when zooming in, thats on a full frame sensor.
even the sony a7s has some in it's 4K video if you relay zoom in and look close.

^^ have fun and you can still shoot 1080p video if you want smaller files and easier playback, might be less new but if you dont have a 4K display then it's not going to relay matter to much if you shoot 1080p.

ps the only resion most ppl shoot 4K on GH4 & sont a7s is so they can down sample to 1080p because it can at time's give a better 1080p file or it can allow for zooming in post.

you can also just take your video in to imove and export out a 1080p video if you want to play with it.

I just shot another 4K video of my MBP 2010 17" computer screen under Windows. I then rebooted to Mac OS and imported the video from my iPhone 6s plus. When I played back the video, from around the middle of the playback, there were some kind of moving nest-like images. Know what is going on?

Thanks for the info. What about the possible new product coming out at the end of this month?
[doublepost=1460634070][/doublepost]Is there anything that I can do to those 4K videos so that slower computers can play them back? Perhaps some how convert them to non-4K videos via my iPhone?

Downsample them to HD via handbrake

Because 4k is intended for screens like 50 inch TVs and lower resolution is high enough to not matter on smaller laptop displays at typical viewing distance.

4K is for 80 inc Tv's i think not 50 inch displays, or at least thats what Philip bloom mentioned in a video on the sony a7s2.

you may not be ready for 4K why not shoot video in 1080p, learn about video then do 4K your making life harder than it needs to be, 4K reqires soemthign like 4x the computer power to work with.

If you can wait, I'd suggest seeing what the June Macbook Pros have to offer. I have seen reports that they will have 4K displays as well as significantly better processors and improved gpus.

If your hinting that Mac's will have 4K, i hate to disappoint, but i can't see that happening... Not a laptop, that u need battery life for more than 4k..

An iMac 5k however maybe do the trick, or a Macbook Pro with Retina connected to external 4K displays, but i see zero chance of a laptop designed for portability and battery life in mind run 4k.

I don't see a laptop that can play 4K video on it's display that will still get the same 10-12 hours of 4K playback.

15" and previous 17" laptops have been heavy enough to barely count as portable and nobody minded.
As for the claims that macbook pros get 10 hours of battery life, you're thinking of macbook airs on their first year of life.
There is no such thing as a macbook pro that actually gets 10 hours of battery life, and if you think there is, I'll trade you a $5000000 Zimbabwean bill for that macbook pro. :)

I tried to convert a 4K video (188.2MB) taken by my iPhone 6s+ into mp4 using iMovie '09. When I chose Share and using QuickTime to export, the resulting mp4 became 5.5MB. However, the video quality is very poor. From Information, it is 1280x720, MPEG-4 Video, AAC. Is there any way to improve the quality?

Although I could use MacX Video Converter Pro (trial) to convert the video, the resulting file is still too large.

85MB for a 2.3 minutes video.

id make the project in 1080p not 720p in imove then export via quick time (share->export using quicktime)
in movie settings go to video->settings in settings set compresion type to h.264
keyframes to auto
quality to best
encoding to best
data rate to auto

sound to acc

that will give you a good file

but it's easier to use handbrake in the 'normal' or 'high profile' setting then change the picture settings so the file is 1080p and export.

handbrake tends to be faster and easier than quicktime

what you can also do is edit your video in imovie then export the video to 'apple prores 422' instead of h264 then take the prores 422 file in to handbrake and export your smaller h264 video from there.

handbrake tends to make better looking smaller files (and it's faster) than almost any other app but if you want to edit first in imove it's best to save as something like prores422 which is almost lossless then go in to handbrake and get your h264 video out.

Thanks. Which aspect ratio should I choose?
[doublepost=1462316554][/doublepost]Using Handbrake, the file size is 98.1MB. Need to make it below 18MB.

why do you need the file so small?
to make the file size smaller try 720p in handbrake.

for aspect ratio you want to leave it the way it was shot i gess, you dont need to change it so.
at what point did you get asked about aspect ratio ?

My 13 inch 2013 still gets 10 hours battery life. But you can keep your Monopoly money.

:E battery life is a tad off topic and depends on what you do, non stop handbrake renders will drain it fast or set the screen to a lower brightens turn of wifi/bluetoth and work in text edit will give you much longer.
