laptop turns off instantly when I plug in headphones

Hey all, I'm running Windows XP on a Macbook Pro via Boot Camp.
Lately, when my laptop is running on battery power (ie not plugged into the wall) and I plug headphones into the headphone jack, the laptop instantly turns off. This does not happen when running on AC power. What can I do about this?

That's the automatic-stop-headphone feature implemented in OS X

Actually I'd call Apple, that sounds like a nasty hardware bug.
