Long time Collector

I have been a long time collector of movies since the 1980's. Some are DVDs, VHS previously viewed from stores, and some are dubbed from cable totaling 4743 movies. If you add some TV Show and Anime, I have total of 5500 in my archives. My movies range from classics with actors such as Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, and many others to much current movies as well. Also I have some mature movies as well. This collection still grows and I update it each year. My wife says I am a very big movie geek and phanatic, which I guess I have to agree,

I am more into TV shows than movies. I have 3100 TV episodes on my server right now. I only have about 100 movies. I don't save either of them. Once they are watched they get deleted to make room for more. The only exception is the shows that I have ripped for my kids to watch. They watch that stuff over and over.

I have never had success with Mac The Ripper. I mostly use FairMount (which works best on a 10.4, not so well on 10.5) to copy the disks, use the newest HandBrake (61%) to RIP them, and then MetaX to tag them. I usually get the episode titles by copy/pasting from my NetFlix account.

I just started doing TV shows about 2 weeks ago. I have 184 so far. I've got around 150 movies done. I wouldn't say I watch any of them a ton, but I watch them more than when they were in cases stuffed in boxes from our move. Neither me nor my wife wants a big rack of DVD's anywhere in the house, so I just leave them in boxes and encoding them makes them available to watch any time we want.

So who has the largest movie collection? I have 1321 movies converted to watch on the Apple TV. How much does everyone else have?

Dude seriously- go outside and get some sun, breathe some fresh air- talk to a three dimensional human being. At least before you watch them all.

I wrote a Perl script that reads the Metadata for each movie and then categorizes by genre and alphabetizes within each genre (as well as adding "HD" if the bit rate is above a certain threshold). It generates the output into an HTML file. The script then uploads the HTML file to a web server of mine.

That way I can access it from anywhere, particularly my phone, and I know if I have something and if it's a blueray rip or not.

Currently at about 850 movies, so you start to loose track of what you have. Some times I go through ATV looking at the movies, and still get surprised that I have some particular movie.

1536 episodes and 240 movies in just over 3TB. I backup to a 4TB with time machine. Every title is legitimately owned. I can't imagine pirating, it would be a storage nightmare LOL. I spent far too much of my life ripping and hand braking, so at one point I had enough. Now I simply buy direct from iTunes...even if the blu ray is cheaper (unless it's drastically cheaper or comes with the iTunes download).

13 years ago i peaked at 250 DVD's. unless you have no life and there is no way you can watch a thousand or 500 movie collection.

got rid of most of my DVD's. buy one or two blu rays per month now.

Why would it be a storage nightmare? Do pirated movies take up more space than ripped movies?

That's not true. Some people like golf. Some like going out to nightclubs. Some like sports. Some like playing computer or video games. Some like basket weaving or bingo or bowling. And some like watching movies as a pastime. It doesn't mean you have no life. It simply means you enjoy watching movies.

You know you can do pretty much the same thing with Plex.

most of those hobbies are a few hours on the weekend. that's 50-60 movies per year

i've been there, where i used to stay in all the time and watch a movie or two every day for most of the week. to watch a 500 movie collection is more than one per day every day.

it's like people bragging about how they take 30GB or more of music everywhere they go. that's literally months of non-stop listening which is impossible to do

My movie collection is over 400 movies and my music collection is over 30,000 songs. No, I don't watch or listen to every one, every day, but they are all used at one time or another. Instead of watching 2 hours of the drivel on TV, I prefer watching a movie. Yes, it's easy to watch a movie every day, if someone chooses to. While it may not be your choice, that doesn't mean it doesn't work for other people.

my point was that if you watch a movie every day then it leaves no time for romantic relationships, family, socializing with friends like the other hobbies you mentioned. all you do is sit home and watch TV

how od you guys navigate such large collections? Through home sharing I can only see one video at a time? To go through all my videos, I have to pan through 500+ titles? There must be an easier way....

That depends on whether you're watching alone or with family, friends, loved ones, etc. Watching a movie a day also leaves 22 hours a day for other things.

I've been looking at integrating Plex, but it's giving me some issues. I used it way back in the day when i was using Plex on a little netbook I had, so my naming conventions for all my movies/tv shows are plex friendly. last night I downloaded the plex media server, and set it to scan my library . When I woke up this morning I found that it was missing a TON of my stuff. Lots of movies, lots of tv shows, even full seasons of tv shows. So... I'm not sure what is going on. Also, Plex slows down my computer something fierce. Just having the server running in the background makes my computer nearly unusable. As soon as I turn the server off, everything is back to normal.

So, maybe plex isn't for me. That's too bad really. I've always loved it's flexibility and it's awesome interface.... I'd like to make it work, but I don't even know where to start with it now.

It sounds like there's another issue at work. I run both the Plex Media Server and the Plex Home Theater apps 24/7 on a 2010 Mac Mini with 4GB of RAM that is also used for many other things, such as running multiple login accounts, ripping DVDs with Handbrake, Teamviewer sessions, MS Office apps, iTunes, editing audio files with Audacity, etc. and I've never had a problem with performance.

Hmmm. I wonder what it could be. I'm running it on a brand new mini... as in 2 days old. So.. I'm not sure what could be going on. There's really not much on the mini besides itunes (which is linked to external hard drives) and that's about it.

You might try re-running a deep scan of your library. Also check Activity Monitor "All Processes" to see what other processes may be consuming system resources.

Cool, I'll give that a shot. How do I perform a deep scan?

Thanks GGJStudios. I'm familiar with a much older version of plex, so i didn't know where to find that sucker!
