Lastest Backup Not Listed As Restore Option On iTunes

I'm switching out iPhone 6 for another iPhone 6.

• Initiated manual backup old phone onto computer using iTunes.
  
• Attempted to restore new iPhone, but prompt told me I had to setup as new phone, then restore.
  
• So, I set it up as a new phone, then clicked Restore Backup.
  
• Restore options from click-down menu only offer me my older iPhone 5 backup (Dec 1, 2016), despite on same screen showing that latest backup was today (Dec 17, 2016). See screenshot http://tinypic.com/r/345yeet/9

How should I proceed?

is your new iPhone up to date? it has to be on the same iOS version or later than what your old device was on when it did the backup.
