You can adjust the 1PW preferences in terms of.. how long it stays unlocked. You can disable lock after sleep / screen saver is activated / fast user switching.

As for the updates / paid updates … I bought (1PW3) in November 2013 and had to pay for the 1PW4 update within a year. However, then they changed policy to: Buy now and get one update for free.

Since updates are half the full price. Assuming there will be no major update this year, I'll be on a $25+ yearly average for 3 year, not counting the additional $10 iOS app. More then I expected.

Just a tip. When a new version comes out I don't upgrade straight away. Agilebits often puts 1Password on sale and I wait for these, it also allows time for them to iron out any nasty bugs.

Interesting, but are upgrades also on sale? Seems only new licenses are discounted on sales.

For example, the 1PW5 for Mac usual price = $ 50
St. Patrick 's day sale price today = $ 35
Upgrade from 1PW3 on St. Patrick's day sale = still $ 25

Are you aware that you pay half for an upgrade any day of the year?

I buy through the MAS, so upgrade prices don't apply to me.

I just got my discount code for purchasing 1Password on the App Store! Should I just buy the Windows version or the Mac + PC bundle? Maybe a dumb question but it might also entitle me to more free upgrades?(Version 5 for windows or Mac 6) :)

Also for my work PC I can use 1PasswordAnywhere, but that means I need to disable 2FA for dropbox and make that password somewhat easy to remember. My question is does this decrease my security? I would need to do this at least once every morning as I need to login to my e-mail, and other sites at least once.

----------

Also how can I move all my stuff from LastPass to 1Password? Is there an easy method?

If you only need the PC version then just get the Windows application. You already have the Mac application from the Mac App Store so you'd basically be purchasing it twice.

I wouldn't count on getting any free upgrades. If it happens, awesome, but you shouldn't set yourself up thinking you'll get anything for free just to be let down if it doesn't happen.

If you have the PC version, you won't need to use 1PasswordAnywhere. You just have to download the 1Password.agilekeychain folder either via the Dropbox app or the website and open it with the Windows application. No need to use 1PasswordAnywhere for this. If you can't install the Windows application then you'll need to login to the Dropbox website frequently enough that maybe you'll want to make it easier. Turning off Two Factor Auth would lower security as you're removing a second factor required to authenticate. I use our Two Factor Auth feature in the iOS application to make this easy. I have a full copy of each of my keychains on my iPhone and it acts as my two factor auth generator:

https://blog.agilebits.com/2015/01/26/totp-for-1password-users/

Using it this way does mean it's not a full second factor, as the blog outlines, but it's far more convenient than using a second app or SMS for the same thing.

Export from LastPass, import into 1Password (File->Import)

Major updates generally require a new license. Version 4 users on Mac got version 5 for free. Version 4 users of the iOS application got version 5's Pro features for free. This is not a typical "expect every other to be free" type of thing. We wanted to do what was right for our users and it just so happened this time we gave away free updates. This is not something that is policy or anything.

As the user below states, upgrades do not get the same discounts since they're already discounted 50%. Generally the nasty bugs are straightened out in beta. Version 5 had no major issues. Version 4 had a few simply due to the fact it was a major rewrite and used zero code from version 3. This is the same on iOS.

As mentioned above, upgrades do not go on sale. So upgrading at any time is fine.

I wouldn't expect this to always be the case. Thus far the deal has mostly been that we promised Mac App Store purchasers who bought version 3 would get version 4. It took us longer to get version 4 out than we anticipated. But we honored that despite the fact there were 2 years or so of free upgrades given for that. Version 5 was a free upgrade for users both on the Mac App Store and the Website version.

We have not yet made any decisions about version 6 as we are quite a long way away from that, but the fact you got 3 versions for the price of one is not something that will always be the case. I don't want expectations to be that you will always get free upgrades from the Mac App Store since it just happened to work out that way so far but it isn't something that is policy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I bought 1PW3 in november 2013 and had to pay for 1PW4. It was due to a bug that this didn't surface until 1PW5.1, but still means I now have to pay to be able to continue using 1PW5 (or 4).

(Which now makes it more interesting to move to the Mac App Store version since I like the iCloud option)

For Mac?

Version 3 users who bought in 2013 got a free upgrade to version 4. You should've received a license email with the version 4 license a day or two after release of version 4.

I can look this up if you private message me your registered email address with us.

My bad, it turns out to be a 2012 1PW3 license and those are not eligible for a free 1PW4 update.

My experience was much better than yours. From memory (and limited receipts) my history is:

  • I bought a 1PW Family license in Dec 2009 and put it on all of our PCs and Macs.
  • I gave "free gift licenses" of 1Password 3 to two of my friends because of a special holiday promotion Agile was offering
  • About a year prior to 1Password 4 being available, I re-purchased 1P3 (this time from the MAS) during their black Friday sale, because Kyle announced here on MR that all people buying from the MAS would get a free update to 1PW4
  • As promised, I got a free upgrade to 1PW4 from the MAS
  • 2014 free upgrade to 1PW5

I am very happy!

Just curious.. What did you pay for 1PW in 2003? Was it version 2 (since 3 was first published november 19th according to the release notes).

Moving to Last Pass myself.

I've always used 1Password, but they've pissed me off for the final time.

I've paid for the iOS 2-3 times and now they are giving the damn thing away for free.

This was after the Mavericks upgrade fiasco that couldn't use iCloud and that forced me to by an App Store copy because they couldn't do anything with the one I bought directly from them.

I've written this company off. They've screwed me 3x now.

I'll not dispute your aggrevation but moving to a product that stores your credentials online and has been hacked more then once may not be the answer to your solution.
Lastpass was breached as recently as last week or the week before, I forget which. While the contents were encrypted, the dirt bags were able to get user data.

Ya, I'm reconsidering. I didn't realized they've been hacked more than once.

I can't decide, my current method is appalling. I use a large number of Windows, Mac, and Linux desktops along with my iPhone 6 and Nexus devices. They all need to be set up without a huge fuss and sync across each other.

What do you guys and gals use? And how do you go about implementing your passwords?

I use a password protected word file that i will not put on a cloud.
Anything can be hacked. Both of the two programs you mentioned have been hacked with user data being stolen, I dont have the link, bur read about 1Password recently. I am paranoid and skeptical about storing my passwords on any cloud in any program or even my encrypted word file.
I use DocsToGo on my main machine. I do not own the full version that syncs with their cloud. So my stuff is on one machine. DocsToGo has a feature that allows me to sync easily to other devices, so when i make a change, i just sync it to my other devices. Quick, easy and my passwords are local on all of my devices.
Edit:
My method works for me. I have all of my passwords in that word file going back years. Hundreds.
I actually bought 1Password last year and was going to try it, but it was a massive task to put them all in.
Ive been hacked on one email account a couple of years ago, and all of my contacts there received a pretty good plea for money because I had been arrested and needed quick money to get out of jail. Lol. Frigin thieves. This happened because of a simple password. It took days to convince distant relatives that it was a scam.
If i were to use a PM, 1Password would be a good option if you kept it llocal.

I use mSecure, on iOS and OSX, never contacted the Dev, never needed support, never had a problem and lets me store my stuff locally, maybe that will change with Apple seeming to wanting to stop local sync, but when then happens I'll no longer be using Apple stuff

I don't know much about Last Pass, but the recent hacking has not helped them in the press.

I use and swear by 1Password. My attitude towards the Internet and logins has completely changed since implementing this. The cost to upgrade or whatever is worth the functionality.

I'd select a product that stores the vault on your local computer, not on their servers - just my $.02.
I use lastpass but am not too fond of their charging for updates. I have both mac and ios versions, the ios I boght before it went free. I used to use lastpass at one time but have long deleted my account there.

I used at one time, when I had android, safe in cloud. If I get put off by 1password I will go back to them. The pc and mac versions are free so anyone can take a look. The ios version is 2.99 but I got it when it was free and they have not had any paid upgrades. Really a good app, if I was not using 1password I would be using it and may go back to it when 1password comes out with their next paid update.

I just installed safe in cloud to check it out and it's pretty good, way ahead of lastpass. I seriously wish I would have looked at it again before buying 1pass for mac. It's good enough to where 1pass is really not worth 50.00 more. It's by far the best free mac app out there as far as I am concerned.

I've used both. I used lastpass for years. I just recently bought 1password.

both are great, but I think 1password offers the most flexibility (wifi/icloud/other sync options, or no sync). 1password is also beautifully designed and works perfectly on safari (lastpass chokes on a few sites).

The iCloud sync option in 1PW is great, as my iCloud is locked down with two factor. However, in reality the wifi sync would work just fine for me (I don't modify my vault all that often).

lastpass wins regarding the chrome plugin for my chromebook.

Right now, I'm using 1password and loving it.

It's not all the features that are free, you still have to pay if you want everything.

I tried 1password for a few weeks, but I never understood what it does, so I uninstalled it. My browser already remembers all my passwords, so what does 1password do on top of that?

Most browsers don't protect your password. It also saves wifi logins (beyond the passcode), software licenses, secured notes, credit cards, reward prams, and more. It also creates unique passwords for everything for you. I like it and used it daily too. It syncs across platform and all my passwords are on all my devices.
