A friend of mine got rid of this late 2009 iMac (EMC2374) and I got it, swapped the HD for an SSD and used it for over a year till the graphic board dead.

Since then I feel bad with the small (...) 23" old Cinema Display attached to a Mini and would so much like to try and resurrect the iMac, I already teared it apart but left it as it is for quite a while and now would like to know if worth to attempt getting a new video board or not.

I understand I have to look for an used board and this already means no warranty it works and even tho it does that it will keep working but, first step, which board would be compatible with this iMac and where to look for it?

Grazie

Giovanni

How are you sure this is what is faulty with the iMac? That is the LED driver board - controls the backlight and the V-sync of the LCD.
I was wondering if you are confusing this for the GPU?

Yep, it gotta be the GPU, vertical stripes along the screen before I quit using it, is there any chance to install a new one?

Yep, you can replace the graphics card in this unit, not sure how easy the cards would be to come by though..
It would require taking the whole logic board out of the machine.

I had the vertical stripes on my mid-2011 27” iMac too — this was almost two years ago (in May). I removed the GPU and baked it in the oven, based on an article I had read, and it fixed it. It’s still working to this day — and it gets daily / heavy use.

It’s worth a shot! I only expected to get a few more months out of it.

Here is the thread where I posted about baking it: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...al-lines.2045854/?post=24593050#post-24593050

If this is not a Core 2 Duo iMac, you can check out this thread HERE for a fix. We've been shoving PC MXM cards in these guys to bring new life and even Metal support to older iMacs. Some of the cards can even be had for as cheap as $20 if you're lucky on eBay.
