Hi guys, need some help.

I am connecting a late 2012 27" iMac running catalina, via amazon basic mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable, to a 27" 1440P Viewsonic Elite XG271QG display. Mini DisplayPort end is plugged into the iMAC thunderbolt 1 port, and HDMI end is plugged into the Viewsonic display.

The problem is on the external display config (Scaled option), i can only select 1080P, 720P, or 1600 x 900 as resolution options. Holding down the option key while clicking scaled option, opened up more resolution options, but they are all still between 720p and 1080p. For some reason i cannot get the 1440P (native resolution of the monitor) to be listed, so i can select it.

Another weird thing is, in the display option it says I have a 30.5 inch 1920 x 1080 monitor (when in fact I have a 27 inch 1440P monitor), even though it display the model number XG271QG correctly.

Spent hours trying to figure out how to fix this without any luck, anyone have ideas what's going on here. It's almost the iMac is incorrectly identifying the monitor, which in turn caused it to limit the resolution option available. But i dont know how to fix that, view sonic dont even have a monitor driver for mac i can install :(

thank you

update: i tried connecting using as mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable and it worked flawlessly! the external monitor is auto set to 1440P, and the option says correctly 27" 1440P monitor.

Unfortunately i need the DisplayPort for my pc gaming laptop for g-sync. So why would mini DisplayPort -> HDMI only show 1080p, but mini DisplayPort -> DisplayPort works fine and show 1440p?

never mind i am an idiot. Figured it out, it says it right on the amazon basic mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable description:
  • HIGH-RES VIDEO: Supports video resolutions up to 1080p
now need to find a mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable that can support 1440p resolution, arg this stuff is too much...

I didn't get the right cable in my first purchase, either. Pick your item carefully.
