Hi, I have the same problem when using 2012 27" iMac.
One day when working on Photoshop the screen became like this- vertical stripes with changing colors.

When I connect it to TBD, the iMac works flawless. Even the brightness on iMac can be adjusted, but the screen didn't show anything but stripes of different colors.

Any help from other member? I'd like to know it's a graphic card issue and can be fixed. Thanks a lot~!

I really hope this works for you. I had the same issue and tried everything but it didn't work. I knew it couldn't be the graphics card because its happened before and it just came right by itself (i know how now). i also took the screen off to make sure the cable were properly connected. Like you i've been using an external display work on my mac. (Highly frustrating). last weekend i was doing some electrical work around the house and had to turn the mains power to the house on and off about 6 times. when i returned to my office later that day i noticed my screen was back on and working perfectly with no lines. My mac is set to reboot after a power failure. the constant rebooting must have fixed the issue. that's the only explanation. Must have happened the first time too. I've been using the external monitor for over a year. You can imagine how happy i was when i saw the iMac screen working again. Try it. hope it works for you.

If you do not get this issue through an external monitor connected to your iMac -- The issue is with the LCD panel on the iMac.

I have bought a bunch of these Imacs 9's to 11's and if they had lines on the screen it was the gpu. I buy another chip on ebay $20ish and a $6 tube of thermal compound and change it. There are all kinds of step by step showing you how to do it. Ifix is one Owc has another.
