good question.
Absolutely. If you don't think like the idea of purchasing a disposable desktop computer, look at some options. Personally, I was careful not to get locked into any Apple specific software in the last 6 years, so I can easily switch to something better.
Do you buy an iPad and get angry that it doesn't run OS X? Do you buy a Mac Pro and get angry that it has no display? On a different note, do you buy a fork and get angry that you can't eat soup with it? No, because we buy things for what they are meant to do. Your point makes even less sense since you talk about consumers en masse. The average consumer doesn't need a quad-core. The average consumer will buy whatever is cheapest, and even the MBA i5 setup in the $499 Mini will do everything they need it to.
"...buy a computer designed for high-level usage"
oh you mean like the 2012 quad core Mac Mini?
after seeing the direction that apple is going....maybe it is time to move on from apple?
I'm not going to lie to you...after moving to os x...i can't stand windows anymore...i actually forgot how to use windows...but either i won't upgrade new mac or move to window and get used to it...
at this point..apple is no different than windows....reminds me of steve ballmer.

Funny how many Sep/Oct 14 join date people come in here, and are saying negative things about Apple. This site has become so full of shills it's awful.
And not saying I think this Mini is awesome or anything. Just the overtly negative posts by people who could have only possibly been on this site for 19 days or less filling the board with negativity.
So everyone that's clamoring for Apple to lower prices is surprised when the low-end, $499 computer is slower?
Got it.
Apple are now becoming a very boring company. It's not only that their products are getting boring, they charge WAY too much (and no - don't need feeding all the usual lines about 'support' and TCO - don't need that old chestnut) it's also that all the hysterical pre-event hype and then the predictable, self-inflicted post-event "disappointment" is cringe worthy, highly annoying, childish and tedious... it just makes me want to grab hold of the people who get involved in it, give them a good hard shake and a slap around the face with a cold flannel, then kick them into next week so they wake up and stop being so utterly idiotic... over such meaningless consumer items. All this crap will be in landfill within a few years - it's utterly futile to consume SO much of one's time, being enslaved to such rampant consumer culture obsession.
I'd think the general Mini customer, even new, would be slightly above the general "new computer user" level, since it means they already have a source of monitor/keyboard/mouse and probably have some idea of checking for suitability, or have someone pointing them at the Mini. Real newbies are more likely to look at a MacBook Air or iMac, I suspect. The Airs also default to 4GB of memory - it isn't quite time to be able to move to an 8GB given Apple's desired price points and margins. It's also irresponsible of Apple to market a 4GB/5400rpm spinning drive computer to new Mac users in 2014.
I hear you... I far prefer osx too, but this is going too far. People that I respect have told me Windows has gotten much better in recent years and I'll give it a try if there isn't a mac mini option that meets my needs next year.

I'll tell you what else is pathetic - arguing over PERSONAL preferences for products, platforms and hardware. It's called PERSONAL choice so it suits YOU. I love Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, ALL OF IT - I love Android, Windows Phone, iOS... all gravy, baby![]()
Probably the latter. Apple has likely concluded that the server market isn't big enough to devote time and energy to. They dropped the XServe a long time ago, and they have been slow to release the server versions of OS X.

Are you describing what you are doing because Apple doesn't make what you want anymore?
I can't remember a time where apple launched a refresh of a product that was an absolute flop job, but this is definitely a big-time fail on their part. I have no idea what their design staff was thinking.
rack mounted iMac servers...don't give Apple any ideas!
