To date, I’ve been very impressed with the durability of my late 2015 iMac, but signs of its demise are finally starting to surface.

About 1.5 years ago, burn-in started as shown in the attached screenshot. It only happens from the edges going about 1 inch in, but then all is fine. When I move/close the window, normal colors return within 5 minutes. it’s absolutely bearable, as it is not getting progressively worse, but we all know it’s on borrowed time. How much longer do you think I have, will it break entirely, and is it okay to continue ignoring until it breaks? How much might a repair be?

I play League of Legends a lot. Works like a charm at 60fps and still does. However, about a few months ago, the computer would completely freeze mid game where the sound starts chirping an in-game sound and I can move my mouse, but I cannot switch applications. The sound then goes completely silent, mouse can still move, but still cannot do anything. It all comes back within about 15 seconds, but any gamer will tel you how detrimental 15 seconds is, especially in League. I can continue to play the game, but 45 seconds later, the issue repeats. then 30 seconds later, it repeats again. Then 10 seconds. Then 5 seconds. By this point it’s unbearable (I no longer let it get to this point), and I must force shut down the computer. When I restart, all is good for at least two weeks. But it is consistently happening every two weeks now. I use my Mac daily, so I don’t shut it down, but do allow it to sleep on a regular schedule. this is a graphics card issue, right? It’s to my understanding that graphics cards are soldered to the logic board, and replacing it is probably not worth it, right? Or is there a potential fix for my issue?

In summary, I have a display burn-in issue ongoing 1.5 years and a possible graphics card issue that started two months ago. Due to the above issues, I am hoping to last until the next 27” iMac or Mac Studio launch. Do you think I’ll make it?

The screen issue isn't going to deteriorate much, if at all, before the M2x Studio/27"iMac arrive so pretty much a non-issue.

I'd just ignore the ghosting and be fine with it. It won't be long before the M2x Studio is available
and with any luck there'll be a larger iMac to boot.

As for the League of Legends issue I doubt it's your video card as you're not seeing problems elsewhere when operating your computer. Possibly an update messed up the games ability to play properly.
Are you up to date on your OS and do you have the latest updates for your game?

I recently sold my 2014 and it had burn-in but not as bad as what you have. I think that the 2015s are a bit worse than the 2014. I would actually only notice it when moving things around as the screen was fairly static for me. The 2014, for me, was otherwise perfect. i7, SSD, 32 GB RAM, high-end video card.

The thing is that I got a Studio and used them together for a while but then determined that I didn't need the iMac anymore. Yes, the screen was nice but the Studio is far more efficient and powerful.

I would not repair a computer from 2015 at this point because the odds of something else breaking is elevated. I have some other old iMacs and would not spend a cent to repair them when I could get them used really cheap. There's a 2014 for sale in my area for $325. I'd guess that it would cost less to just get another iMac than it would be to replace the screen.

League of Legends forces updates every 2-3 weeks, or else you cannot play the game. I don't play any other games at the current moment, but have played WoW heavily in the past (stopped playing months before the issue started, though).

Good call on the computer update though.. I'm on 12.6 (Montery is the latest support OS for this iMac model) when 12.6.2 is out. I'll give it a shot... sure wish this "Automatically keep up to date" feature would work correctly, for 12.6.1 has been out since 10/24/22, and 12.6.2 since 12/13/22

Yeah, the burn-in is my #1 reason to consider a Mac Studio over iMac (if Apple even releases another 27") as my next Mac.. sure, I can repair the display of an iMac, but I expect a standalone display to last longer than an all-in-one display.

I hope to be able to ride this through to next year. The ultimate scenario that I need to figure out is what do I do if it completely craps out in, say, March, when a Mac Studio update is in, say, October. Oh, well.. that's my problem to figure out.. thanks!

Auto update is a crapshoot, no two ways about it.
By the way, I'm in the same boat as you.
I'm running a late 2015 27" IMac and waiting patiently for Apple to come out with a larger iMac.
I'm in no rush. There's almost two years of security updates for Monterey to hold me over.

I had a 2014 iMac with similar issues.

Technically, it is not burn-in, it is image persistence (aka image retention). Burn-in is permanent, image persistence is temporary, and apparently is due to overdriving the sub-pixels. It is possible to reduce it. For example:

Other people have devised other methods or used other apps, with mixed results.

The 2015 iMac is also notorious for developing pink edges. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2015-27-imac-has-pink-edges-anyone-else.2178372/

Both will get worse with time. The image persistence eventually bugged me too much, so I traded for a 2020 iMac.

The only possible repair is a new screen. Generally not worth it for a 2014/2015 iMac, unless you are brave and DIY (~$500 eBay)

I have no comment on your possible GPU issues.

Agree with wilberforce your experiencing image retention, not permanent burn in.
Run a screensaver for 10-15 minutes and see if that clears up your image retention.
Either Flurry or Drift should do the trick.
