Saw this over the weekend, not a scratch or smudge. It looks like the part (maybe hinge) underneath the panel is causing the top to bend around it causing the mark on the outside. This pic is of the cover hinge side.

Anyone ever see anything like this?

What part of the laptop do you have pictured? Hard to tell from your picture.
Right or left rear corner, where the hinges are located? Or close to the center of the back edge?

If that's a closeup where the hinge is located, then you may have a part of the hinge loose.
You might be able to see that area if you remove the bottom cover.
Does the hinge feel "right" when you open and close the lid? Does it make any unusual mechanical noises?

If those marks are caused by the hinge being too stiff, it must be really, really stiff, or the case must be defectively weak there. I've never seen such a thing caused in that manner on an MBP.

Sorry, this is exactly in the center of the back edge. The hinge feels fine, not loose or too hard to move.

Weird.

Does that area feel like it looks (actual bumps you can feel)?
Or, just scuffs in the surface - nothing that you can feel?

Either way, is it likely that you have dropped it while in a carry case?

OK
Your picture is just not clear to me.
Are those dents (inward), or protrusions (outward)

You really can't look inside the lid to determine what is happening, but I would guess that something is loose inside the lid, applying pressure to the top cover.

Make an appointment with a "genius" - maybe Apple will have another idea for you.

Bump here,
the exact same markings in the same area have shown up on my late 2016 mbp 13" (non touchbar).
it definitely appears to be becoming from under the casing. Seemed to show up randomly.
Curious if anyone has an idea about the cause, or more importantly the long term implications on the overall
case structure / machine.

Thanks

The more I read on this forum, the more it seems like you have to handle those new MBPs with kid gloves.

I do not know about the long term implications, but what I do know is that regardless I would be contacting Apple about this issue if it were present on my machine. I think that they will want pictures, and will likely want to look at the case to determine what exactly went wrong theirselves.
