So with 16” MBP announced and Mac Pro on the way, do you think that maybe Apple will also refresh iMac line? I want to buy 2019 model but I am affraid that there can be some updated model with 5000 series GPUs from AMD around the corner. I doubt that they would also refresh CPUs since new MBPs have 9th gen as well.

This is a hard time to buy an iMac with all the hardware changes going on throughout the Apple line. I would doubt that there is a update happening in 2019, but this has been a surprising year, so who knows. You can take some comfort in the fact that the current 2019 iMac has gotten good marks for improved cooling/quieter fans, and CPU speed - I've read only good feedback from MacRumors' posters.

2018 gave us big updates to the Mac Mini and Air. 2019 big updates with the new 16" MBP and Mac Pro. I'm hoping this means finally a big update in 2020 for the iMac with a new redesign.

While I could wait and see what would happen in next year (cause right now I am off-season for photoshooting), I am afraid that either 2020 will not be a year of totally new iMac (cause right now Apple is on 18 month update cycle for iMacs so the next one could be expected either Late 2020 or even Early 2021 model) or that when I will wait and nothing will happen, I will buy already "obsolete" model and will be stuck in "what-if-they-will-release-it-now" limbo.

I think CPU wise, 2019 has also been strong for current iMacs (for same price as 2017 models have basic 6C/6T CPU or top specced 8C/16T CPU - while 2017 models had 4C/4T and maxed out 4C/8T CPUs)

If the new redesign with smaller bezels removes the Apple logo from the chin, I am glad I got the 2019 iMac. If it ends up looking boring like the new Pro Display XDR, I think it will actually be a downgrade in aesthetics compared to the current design.

I think XDR display has such industrial and “boring” design on purpose. But they will never make such design for iMacs. Furthermore, there is no way they will remove the chin as it is important for housing of components. Maybe they will go with smaller bezels.
