I have just purchased the newest 13'' rMBP and would like to partition 50 gb for some games. I have an old external DVD drive that connects by USB (not made by apple) and my old windows 7 CD. Am I able to install windows 7 by plugging it in, running bootcamp in the utilities folder, and waiting?

Googling has me worried as I keep seeing issues, but mostly related to windows 8/usb issues. If anyone can shed some light on if my set up should work (or not) that would be very much appreciated, thank you!

Yes that shouldn't be a problem. If there is a problem, just create an image of the Windows DVD, create a bootable USB stick and install it like that.

You should be fine. I used an LG external drive and booted Windows 8 normally, so I see no reason why Windows 7 wouldn't work.
