I've searched the forums here and elsewhere but don't find a proper answer to this problem. I've got a brand new 13 rMBP fully spec'ed up. I'm only running the latest OSX, no dual boot, parallels or other "non-mac" config. About 50% of the time I can just close the laptop and then come back to it and it immediately brings up the login screen. But the other 50% of the time it doesn't start up. The solution is to hold down the power button for 15 sec, release and push power to start up. It always starts that way.

Of course after the "hard" reboot, any work that was not saved is lost. I spend a heap of time on this machine every day but I can't seem to work out any pattern or cause. There is also no time asleep that seems to cause this. Sometimes it will wake from overnight, but other times it won't. And likewise, sometimes it will not wake from a 5 min nap, while other times it wakes just fine.

I've never seen a delay in the waking. It either wakes immediately or doesn't wake at all. I've followed the SMC reset procedure twice without any noticeable difference.

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers,

It might well be the sleep images or swap file are corrupt. Try deleting them using a terminal window, they are located in the /var/vm folder. A one-step command to do this would be:

sudo rm -f /var/vm/*

After deleting them they are located in the trashcan. Empty that after the first restart to get rid of them.

Thanks! This might have fixed the issue. It's been one day without any problems waking from sleep. I'll give it a couple of more days and report back.

Cheers,

I have the same problem on my new rmbp 13. The problem only occurs if I don't use my computer for several hours (more than 12 hours). Tried the smc reset, didn't work. Finally took my computer in to the apple store today. They couldn't find anything on initial diagnostics so they will keep the computer for a couple of days for testing. Keep me updated if that fix worked for you.

Any updates from either of you on this? I'm having the same issue the last week or so. Wakes every time I try during the day, but something happens between my office and the house that it takes many clicks of the trackpad and power button for it to finally wake... I have had a bad habit of putting it in sleep and into my bag for 30 mins in transit...I should probably turn it off, but that will continue to be a debate lol.

Sorry I haven't replied to this thread in a couple of weeks. But the news isn't good. I can't seem to see any relation between purging the sleep images/swap files and it waking from sleep. I've used the purging procedure many times and I've noticed that sometimes there are files in the trash to then delete, but other times there aren't any files in the trash after running the rm - f command.

Sometimes I can go a full 24 hours or more without any problem and the rMBP wakes immediately as it should. Other times it seems that every time I close the lid, it requires a hard restart to wake up again. And I've not been able to find any correlation to any specific type of activity, pre sleep.

I haven't called Apple about this yet as I'm in transit moving from Australia to the US at the moment. But I'll certainly raise the issue as soon as I'm settled in one location.

In the mean time, any other suggestions are appreciated.
