My point is that you're not going to change the fact that the US market has basically decided on chip and signature as the "standard"

America is supposed to be "great" because we're supposed to have a say in the way our government operates. So what do we have? Politicians that only "recommend" chip and pin... Not a government that tells the banks they have to issue the cards. Writing a letter to my local congressman would only be a waste of time. Our government doesn't have the balls to tell big businesses what to do... They're like a scrawny nerd who gets pushed around by a bully 24/7. That's why these businesses are able to bribe politicians with money and keep a lot of their profits in banks overseas.

I hope America wakes up someday and realizes how they're inferior to every other first world country, when they used to be the leader.

Or that some stores will probably only upgrade once their current machines break and not a second sooner.

Guess I'll have to go to those stores, disconnect the machine and chuck it at the wall so it breaks.

You can decide to get a chip and PIN card though

Just like with contactless, only like three banks in the entire fragmented, huge banking market in America has chip and pin enabled cards. I think Santander is one of them.

and can decide to spend your money at the places that have upgraded already

Well there's a slight problem with that. My local Subway, Arby's, Walmart, etc. all accept chip... But here's the catch, they don't account for every area of spending. Not a single car maintenance shop, doctor's office, REAL restaurant, gas station, or grocery store accepts EMV or NFC (with the exception of Subway and Wegmans, Wegmans being NFC only right now).

Let me know how jail turns out.

Hundreds of banks and credit unions support Apple Pay, Android Pay and/or Samsung Pay; contactless doesn't just mean the physical cards, you know. And if chip and PIN and/or having contactless on the physical card really is that important to you, it should be no problem to sign up with one of the issuers of such cards, right?

I would hope you don't have to go to the doctor or mechanic that often. And I'm not sure sit-down restaurants are really "every day" spending for a lot of people either, though I have been to a few that used the chip on my card. Gas stations basically have until 2017 as well to upgrade their pumps.

As for grocery stores: Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts and Kroger do at least EMV. All of those but Kroger also support Apple Pay. If you count Walmart and Target as grocery stores, those support EMV too.

In short, hardly "nowhere".

Obviously it's a joke.

Yes, the whole two banks that support contactless credit cards without a phone in the United States... HSBC and Santander. The rest of the civilized world has contactless credit cards and debit cards everywhere. So in other words... I'd have to once again shift my direct deposits and set up bill payments through a bank to have this technology available to me when It should just be standard.

It's always amazing how Americans accept being backwards as the norm, like it's a good thing or something.

I go to to the doctor regularly to get a check up. By "doctor" I also mean dentist. When I mean mechanic, I meant oil changes, inspections, and the works.

None of those grocery stores exist near me. Not even in the same state, with the exception of Trader Joe's... And Trader Joe's isn't a real grocery store.

Hard to tell on the internet.

Apple Pay is better than contactless cards though. So in a way, the banks are actually ahead of the game.

(Also, you forgot about AmEx.)

Every six months doesn't count as "every day" in my book, but that's just me.

I find it hard to believe that you don't at least have a Walmart near you. And Trader Joe's has produce, bakery, meat, dairy and even alcohol at the ones here, so I'd consider them a grocery store. (Not to mention that they're coded as one according to Chase and other issuers.)

It's safer, yes. However, it can be a pain in the butt sometimes when you have multiple cards. I was at McDonalds a couple of weeks ago, and I could've sworn I chose my Citi Double Cash card to use with Apple Pay, but somehow I ended up paying with my Citi debit card without realizing it until after. I think there's a problem where you click on one card, yet another card pops up sometimes for some reason.

And yes I did forget about AMEX, good point, but not everyone qualifies for an AMEX. Personally, I've had it with them because they keep declining me for a card when Discover had no problem giving me one and a credit line increase. You do, however, have to ask for a contactless card, and sometimes the rep on the other end has no idea what you're talking about, so they send you a contact card in the mail three times first before you even end up with a contactless card... On top of that, AMEX doesn't advertise their contactless feature.

Sometimes I'd rather just pull out my card and wave it near the terminal.

True, I do have a Walmart too, you're right. Traders Joe's around here just sells food you've never heard of before, mostly foreign food, or weird food that isn't really a meal, nor can you make an actual meal out of it, like fancy chocolate from a different country. Walmart has the opposite problem, though, it doesn't accept contactless, and their cashiers are the slowest in the nation.

Never had that problem. I double-tap the home button though instead of letting the phone detect the NFC field.

I actually had no problems getting one this time for my latest AmEx. Their training probably improved a fair amount if nothing else.

Oh, the new Costco card has it too and you don't have to request it.

No such issues with self-checkout at Walmart. And Trader Joe's seems to sell a lot of the same stuff as other grocery stores around here, just under their brand. YMMV of course.

I did double tap the home button.

I did forget about that one. Was advertised (sorta) in the picture with the first advertisement before the card was released, but doesn't seem to be advertised now. More cards need to follow suit.

I've accidentally used the wrong card in ApplePay too. It doesn't ever seem to happen if you use the double tap of the home button or just put the phone near the terminal both of which will use the default card you have saved. Where I've had it happen is when I've selected something other than the default card. I've never been sure if I didn't actually select my intended card or if maybe it didn't have time to actually load the right info before I made the NFC connection. I seem to recall that I've gotten the wrong card on my watch more than on my phone. I figured it was an error on my part of swiping to the intended card.

As far as the Costco card goes, I have one that had the NFC logo on the back, but I've yet to get it to work on a NFC terminal. I haven't tried too much because I don't want the cashier looking at me like I'm some crazy idiot who doesn't know how to swipe or insert a card. :) I did post about this on a different board about the Costco card. Others reported similar problems, but there were different opinions as to why. One person claimed to have asked for a new card and got it to work, another said their card didn't work some places but did work at Walgreens. Another said that was because some terminals might not be compatible with the newest NFC standard that Citi may be using in the card. I don't know if any of that is true. I haven't bothered to try to call Citi because of the debacle they seem to be dealing with since the Costco conversion from Amex just getting everyone's accounts set up correctly. I didn't have any issue there, but I figured that me calling and whining about a defective PayWave card would be the least of their worries. I do wonder if this is a feature that Costco demanded though. They haven't turned on EMV yet and I think maybe they were waiting for PayWave cards so they don't have to slow down their cash register lines waiting for EMV approvals. I know Costco is very sensitive to transaction speeds. They'll certainly be even more ticked at Citi if there's a widespread problem with PayWave working. I figure I have it loaded in ApplePay and that's how I'd prefer to use it anyway....I'm just hoping Costco does turn on NFC soon.
