The iOS 16.1 beta that was released to developers today removes the erroneous Adaptive Transparency toggle that was added for the original AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max in the prior beta.

After updating last week, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max owners running the AirPods firmware beta found an "Adaptive Transparency" toggle in the AirPods settings, and it was initially assumed that Apple had brought the Adaptive Transparency feature of the AirPods Pro 2 to older AirPods models.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman yesterday said that the Adaptive Transparency option was actually a bug, which Apple has now confirmed by removing the setting in the current beta. It was decidedly curious that Apple opted to bring a major AirPods Pro 2 feature to the original AirPods Pro, so it makes sense that it was a mistake and that the setting was accidentally made visible on devices that do not support it.

Adaptive Transparency is an AirPods Pro 2-exclusive feature that is enabled by the new H2 chip in the device. It is designed to allow the ‌AirPods Pro‌ to quiet loud sounds, such as sirens, construction work, or loud speakers at a concert without blocking out all noise.

i wish this could be ported to the original pro and max, but it isn't enough to make me buy the pro 2

Just out of interest, did the toggle actually do anything? Or was it just a UI bug?
Does the toggle actually do anything on the AirPods Pro 2?

I'm being 100% serious. I was just out walking with mine and walked by someone mowing about 80ft away and I couldn't even hear my podcast. I stopped to experiment, toggling adaptive transparency on and off and I could tell ZERO difference. I then turned on noise cancelling and the lawn mower instantly disappeared into a faint wisp of a sound in the background, much better than my old AirPods Pro.

Either my AirPods Pro 2 somehow have a busted adaptive transparency mode, or this "feature" is complete BS.

I should probably make a post about this sometime in the forum, but I want to test it some more first. Does anyone else have this issue? Or am I just not understanding how this feature works at all?

Some folks reported it was working on Air Pods Pro 1. It would be great if someone else could confirm.
"They were hearing wrong" :) . I agree, few were reporting that it worked with beta version of APP 1 and APM.

I had installed the beta firmware. It would turn on, but it was either extremely subtle or not working. I couldn't really tell a difference.

The question is, did it work?
Ohhh, but i bet it didn't work as intended, just like Stage Manager... *cough, cough*

Yeah sure Apple we will believe you!

At least they’re not like Tesla. If Tesla was selling them you would have to make an in app purchase for $249 to unlock adaptive transparency 😂

Funnily enough I remember seeing posts of people saying that the feature was broken and didn't do anything.

Other people called them crazy.

This is a good example of the placebo effect.

Some people are rabidly adamant that they can hear the difference between lossless and non-lossless, while others are adamant that it's highly humanly-impractical if not humanly impossible.
