Springboard and Control Center customization alone are worth the upgrade, but also:

- loads of small Safari improvements (reader mode, the way extensions are handled, "removed distractions") add up to a really huge upgrade that I'd never go back on
- remote-screen for iPhone on Mac
- RCS support in Messages
- emoji tapbacks on Messages (it's silly but I like it and long overdue)
- Passwords app

It adds up. iOS 17 would feel very backward to me now.

He's specifically asking about 18.1. All the things you listed are in 18.0.

Not much. I had it on my 15 Pro Max and ended up removing it. My battery life was terrible and there was literally nothing worth keeping it on there. Call recording was the only thing but I can't see who is ever going to use that feature unless its some business call that you and the other party both agree to have the call recorded.

Siri is the same old Siri and all it does is light up the outside of the screen. It doesn't understand context or anything like that. There are AI summaries for notifications but I turned them off as I didn't find them useful at all. There is also the cleaup photo tool but I found it really buggy.

Other than that there isn't a whole lot else.
Everytime this big trouble around any kind of update :)

Why is it so hard to move them around? What logic is it following? It took me 5 minutes to move one icon because others kept randomly shuffling around behind it.
Control centre is totally bugged in this release just as it was mid way through 18.0 beta cycle. Buttons keep moving, appearing and disappearing and generally being extremely annoying.

I want an undo button for when i try to move one icon and a whole bunch of icons do random moves completely messing up what i was trying to do. Resetting to default isn’t really a solution but better than nothing

So take away Apple Intelligence, what else is there in 18.1 that helps non AI capable phones? As in good features, not just bug fixes. Also, besides what's in this article.
Not a huge amount on my iPhone 11, but it's the next evolution of iOS 18, and is running well. There are some minor changes (such as drag & drop for phone mirroring).

Still no WIFI or BT OFF button, it’s just a “not connected” state.
At least we can add shortcuts to the CC now, and I've added two. One toggles Wi-Fi on/off and the other Bluetooth. I still have the standard 4x4 block so that I can see the icons change colour to reflect the state.

Overall bugfixes and under the hood improvements.
Yep. I've noticed nothing that got worse going from 18.0 to 18.1 (b5 today) so if you like betas you might as well get it.

Yeah, I certainly didn't see an hour extra battery life with iOS 18. The battery life remained terrible just as it was terrible on iOS 17.
And why going back to 17 when it’s the same terrible battery life?
Why not using an Android phone with a bigger battery when you’re so disappointed with the iPhone battery life? There are phone out there with much better battery performance.

Will at least wait for the RC.
No AI features for me in Germany so there is absolutely no rush to get 18.1 as a beta for me.

Why do you care? I don't like Android and I switched to the 16 Pro Max in hopes that it fixed the heat issues and battery issues I was having with the 15 Pro Max. No one is bashing iOS 18, I just didn't get good battery life with it. Take a deep breath, its all ok.

For me it’s all ok :)
There are people continuously complaining about battery life and heat. It’s a modern smartphone. It can get slightly warm when under heavy load.

There's a difference between slightly warm and downright hot. If you don't use a case like me then the 15 Pro Max gets hot to the touch. Its why Apple redesigned the thermals of the 16.

iOS 18 is basically a buggy beta and we are the testers. I had countless bugs and glitches throughout the system. Due to their failed / postponed AI push, Apple had no resources left for iOS debugging.

But your 16 Pro stills runs so hot to the touch? Damn :)

Could you list some of these "countless bugs and glitches"?

I haven't had a single issue since I joined the 18.0 beta, then the 18.1 beta 🤷‍♂️

Nice. I hate how they are all in the main panel right now. I just want individual icons for all of them.
It wouldn't be as bad if it had some different size options too. It's either square or whole page, no middle sizing.

It would be really nice if they would add a flashlight brightness control slider back on the Control Panel. I'm not a fan of the weird interface on the dynamic island. It's not clear at all that it's something you can adjust, and it would really be much better as a regular slider like it was previously, or like the volume or brightness sliders.

But, without AirDrop button, I still need to put the connectivity square on Control Center. I mean, what if someone wants to AirDrop something to me?

The fact that they're making updates to Control Panel in 18.1 implies that they'll probably keep working on it for the next 18.x releases, so possibly that could come in 18.2, etc.

I'm sure the idea is that Control Center is for quick changes as it always has been this way.

The distinction between off and disconnected for brief periods is negligible. You can individually turn them "off off" in the phone's real settings. Or use Control Center to enable airline mode which puts them into a "real" off and selectively re-enable the radios you need.
