Maybe if you tap out F-L-A-S-H in Morse Code it will turn on Flash support. :D

Better yet, if you tap out A-N-D-R-O-I-D it will give you an electrical shock. :D

Still wish multitasking was implemented with Cover Flow.

A couple? This is quickly getting out of hand.

how many commands are we talking about here? 4? 5? 6?
surely everybody can easily remember up to 10 or 15 click-hold combinations?

on our keyboards we use alt, control and command keys in various modifier combinations automatically hundreds of times every day --> this is no different, if anything easier to do without thinking

Another button will also add a little bit of wiggle room for future features as well.

since the phone made a statement by having only one button when introduced, it would be a shame to now add buttons for "wiggle room", i hope apple finds better solutions than relying on "wiggle room",
eg: voice commands, turning back of device into touch surface, squeezing the sides of device, i am sure there are numerous other options

the only physical button i agree is necessary is the photo shutter, this is not well solved on the touch screen

Yea, I doubt they would add another button other than a camera button because of the whole image of the iPhone... but it could REALLY have used a dedicated Answer Call and End Call button... Was anyone else tired of using their nose to answer calls in the winter?

Finally no more accidentally getting into landscape!

How does it work though? Is there a setting that you go to? Or does it work through multitasking? Does it work on the 3G, even though multitasking isn't supported?

How does it defeat the purpose? Isn't the idea to stop rotation?

we ought to be able to lock the iphone into either portrait or landscape mode, not just portrait mode.
when lying on our sides we may want the phone to be in landscape mode, thus there is no point that it is locked into portrait mode. this wold defeat the purpose. i believe this is obvious

You can already lock the phone in landscape mode for lying down viewing. It's portrait mode you can't currently lock it in.

I actually can't think of a single time that I've wanted to lock something in landscape mode..

really? have you never found yourself lying on your side, wishing you could read your mail or a webpage in landscape mode?

I think you got that backwards... I mean, the feature says "Portrait Orientation Locked" for a reason. ;-)

Wrong... it ONLY locks in Portrait mode. What's up with that, Apple?

Locking into landscape isn't a big deal. Choose the appropriate landscape so that when you lay to your side the iPhone becomes "Upside Down". Safari and most apps don't support "PortraitUpsideDown" so it will stick to landscape. I do it all the time.

I tried the first beta and I loved it, but quickly hacked my way back to 3.1.3 because I am developing an app with plans to release it soon so I need the current OS to test accurately. I am a one-man dev with one iPhone :(

I didn't... when I turn my iPhone to landscape, it switches to landscape. I then turn it again in the same direction, and it remains in landscape mode.

That's not "locking" in Landscape. The iPhone doesn't support "upside down". The iPad does.

Good question. I have a 3GS so I can't tell, but what happens on a 3G when you double-click the home button?

That's because you can't currently lock the phone in portrait mode when holding it in landscape lying down. You can, however, lock the phone in landscape mode when lying down.

what are you trying to say?

The original poster said that it would be easy for us to remember long tap-combinations on one button... Said that it was easier than just adding a stinking extra button. I was being facetious.

That's not "locking" in Landscape. The iPhone doesn't support "upside down". The iPad does.

Actually you can support all 4 orientations if you are a developer, but apple recommends avoiding Upside Down because it gets confusing if a phone call comes in. (Phone App only supports Portrait, likely due to the location of speaker/mic)

I think they have pulled Beta 3. I downloaded it, and then went to re download Xcode and the beta was gone. The site has the top banner saying "Download iPhone 4.0 Beta 2."

How strange, I saw this article as it was posted and downloaded the beta 3 installer from the iPhone dev centre. However when trying to update my dev iPhone, iTunes crashes.

I've just gone back to the iPhone dev centre to see if there are any release notes related to this and the OS 4.0 page has now reverted back to beta 2.

i have never had to use my nose for this, it is a nice image, thanks! :)

thanks also for the tip of landscape-mode-lock in your previous post, will try it later tonight.

But the phone is locked in landscape - i,e, it won't switch to portrait mode.

It's not "locked". Just rotate the other way. Or, keep rotating it until it flips to the other landscape mode and then portrait. That's not "locking" and "unlocking". Apple's apps just don't support upside down.

Is it just me or is iphone 4.0 not that interesting?

Maybe is because ive had the features apple is "innovating" with for like 2 years already.

I had to use Xcode beta 2 to restore mine, but you can probably use "restore" from iTunes as well. It will erase your phone.

Exactly! And that's why you only *need* a portrait lock since landscape can already be locked by virtue of the phone not switching to portrait mode again when turned completely upside down! That was my point.
