People here need to face up to the fact that Apple is trying to provide access to technology to as many people as possible. The obvious downside is you have to cater for the lowest denominator.

it's all good giving the most people access to new technology. but there should be a point at which the lowest denominator learn to be better in order to progress, rather than get the easiest and laziest option.

if apple isn't careful, they'll end up making some crazy kind of unix/windows hybrid beast with all this launchpad and full-screening lark.

So far I've read this entire thread. Since that's 20 minutes of my life I'll never get back I feel entitled to say...

Launchpad is useless eye candy.

It's amazing how after all these iterations of OSX people here say they "love it" and act like their productivity has increased ten fold because of it. :D

I actually deleted the file out of disgust. To think the coders wasted time developing this when they could have fixed a few more bugs.

So what am I doing wrong?

Granted, I haven't been able to spend much time with Lion yet, but in checking it out last night, Launch Pad has two copies of virtually everything that's in my Applications folder. I've got about eight "dots" or screens that I can scroll through.

How did that happen and how do I correct it? I don't want to delete something from Launch Pad and then find out that I've really deleted it altogether.

As an existing iOS user I like it for organising applications whilst leaving the actual /Applications directory exactly as it is.

As for true reasons, well the whole OS seems to me to be increasingly geared towards touch screens. If that means OS X will influence iOS more, great! (If it means iOS will influence OS X more... we'll see)

Love it.. Is a superb piece of equipment I use all the time.. I could not live without err... whatever we are talking about in the thread...

Just wanted to be positive :)

Ah yes launchdaddy, well since I type with 2 fingers for me it is god send.. I can see why for you gurus of power use and typing with all digits, nose and eyebrows, launchdaddy might not be cool, but.. we are all not the same..

See... I use my fingers to hold a beer can and point to my g/f to what she needs to do around the house.. (yeah, right)..

Launchpad is useless eye candy.
IMO, LaunchPad emulates the iOS method of app management that millions of non-Mac owners already know:

o install Apps via the App Store
o hold an App until it wiggles to move/uninstall it
o drop an App on an App to make a folder

Giving the Mac the option to manage apps the same way is brilliant. It removes one hurdle (app management) for a lot of non-technical potential Switchers. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mac's "customer satisfaction" rating go up even higher because of LaunchPad.

And people like you can completely turn it off. Win/win.

I freaking LOVE Launchpad. The magic lies in stepping back and de-cluttering all the unneeded apps from your everyday stuff.
This.

I have one page with my main apps in a sequence that makes sense to me, not alphabetic order the way they were in the Applications folder.

Instead of having to track down to a specific point on my dock, I make a gesture wherever my pointer happens to be.

All the junk (apps I never use, apps I use but that auto-launch when required, etc) are tucked away in folders on a separate page instead of cluttering up my Apps folder.

I didn't like it at first until I read a suggestion on here, I removed all apps from the dock and put my most used apps on the first page of Launchpad and set a hot corner to enable it.

I really like it, the dock now only shows running apps and is much smaller, a quick flick of the mouse turns on Launchpad with my main apps and I also prefer it to a magnified dock.

Loving Launchpad!

I'm loving Launchpad.
It's a nice quick way of accessing an app.
Hence, I have the dock hidden.

But, what I find annoying is that the dock becomes unhidden every time I launch Launchpad.....kind of defeats the purpose.

...arrrgh.

Launchpad's animations are far too sluggish for me to even consider using it. It's a tacky experience when every time you enter or exit Launchpad, or open a folder, the animations suddenly lose their fluidity.

Does anyone have apps show up multiple times in Launchpad?

I have two iMovie and two Textedit. It won't let me delete the extra shortcut in Launchpad either. Wonder what the solution might be?

Hot corners.
Assign launchpad to one. Fast and easy to get to your apps.
It's a great option when set up this way.

Where does it say that there should only be one way to do anything on a computer? QS/Spotlight/Dock/Launchpad. That's an almighty 4! What's there to complain about? Just use your favourite, or change as the situation dictates. No need to throw a strop, threatening to delete the file in anger!

Alfred is better. Way better.
Why, may I ask?

You don't have to overstuff your dock as it is.

Whats quicker:

Hit CMD + Space, type 'Photosh' then enter - Photoshop Opens

OR

Click 'LaunchPad' in your Dock, Scan the page (or pages if you have a lot installed) for the 'Photoshop CS5' Directory, open the Directory, Click the 'Photoshop.app' icon.

See the point here? Its a very slow way of launching apps.

I'll give it a few months before it goes the same way as Dashboard...I.E being a feature hardly anyone uses.

Not slow at all if you organize your most used app in the first page of launchpad and associate a keyboard shortcut to launchpad...
I used to use spotlight, but sometimes I misspelled, sometimes I did not recall the exact name of the app, sometimes there are similar names and you have to write it completely...
Application folder in the dock? No thanks, much much too slow to open and to find the desired app among tenths of them
Launchpad is fine with me so far... I'd only like Apple could re-activate (like it was in early build of beta Lion) the function to remove (not delete) unwanted or mostly unused app from Launchpad folders so you could further trim you available apps and have all those you use close at hand without cluttering the dock... I like it clean!

⌘ Space is my LaunchPad ..

That new gimmick so called LaunchPad is to attract some tourist on Apple Store. It was designed to make those tourists say ".. Whoa, cool ..." and they would buy a Mac right after. Smart move

I've tried it and it has no other purpose rather than looks cool and nice. Less functionality, more time to launch an app

So much for being called LaunchPad :D

No, but I had icons not matching with names.
So Photoshop was titled Mail, iCal titled Parallels Desktop etc..

And sometimes when moving the icons around, I experienced no icon at all.

R.

It's ideal if you're on a MacBook or if you have a magic trackpad, but it's hard to get to without the gesture, and the OP is right; why take the time to open an app to open another app?

i like it.

i don't keep a ton of **** in my dock.. just the most critical apps. my dock consists of chrome, mail, ical, itunes, quicktime, iphoto, and word. all of the other apps i use I don't keep in the dock unless they are running. i dont like it being cluttered.

so launch pad is perfect. simple swipe on the trackpad and all the other applications that i need are right there to click on. keeps them hidden and out of the way when i don't need them, but it's really quick to access them.

I find it more intuitive with the magic mouse as I set 3 finger click as the launch pad configuration.
