The real problem is the functionality you lose. For example, I would very often grab a photo or other item out of a web browser, four-finger-flick-up to reveal desktop, and drag it right on there.

The only alternative is to set a hot corner, which is not an option for me.

With BetterTouchTool, this is still possible. You have to make sure an advanced setting to ignore your thumb is checked to make it work though. You click on an image down with your thumb (or with another finger on the other hand) on the trackpad (not a tap but an actual click) and then use your four remaining fingers to swipe and a single finger to position it.

What Apple did was ruin what was already a perfectly good gesturing system but you should just ignore their mistakes and use the best alternative there is at the moment.
