Maybe I'm missing something, but what is the point of a foldable phone? I understand that its a very cool proof of concept but I just don't get it. Not trying to be negative, I am genuinely curious.

I agree. I see absolutely no point in this yet people will buy them just because it’s be seen as the new cool!

This is one fad I hope doesn't take off. First Samsung and now Google. Please let it die with only those two.

Very much disagree. Look at what M$ have been doing. Night and day.

That, in combination with iDevices becoming commoditized to a point of yawn status, makes for a very interesting and highly competitive future. (no offense, I meant how boring and uninspiring they are relative to the competition)

With this format, it seems you will be able to read a PDF like a traditional book.

That is a killer use case for me personally.

Urgh so good! Cant innovate anymore my ass.

Serious question what is the benefit of this.. A bigger screen is nice. But is it really? Seriously inquiry only dont be rude please...

‘Multi-context’ usage such as:
  • Mail w/ calendar
  • Whatever IDE w/ Browser for full stack / general web dev
  • Keyboard on one screen, app on another?
  • Presentation controls w/ Presentation preview
  • ???
  • Profit
All of this can be done on one screen of course but mobile OS’s leave a lot to be desired w/ regards to multitasking – feels like a regression when compared to its desktop counterparts.

I could be entirely wrong, and you could argue that the gap between the screens makes for bad consumption, but I’m thinking more productivity.

How do people still not understand this? What are you still struggling to understand?

Compact like a phone for certain use cases and expands to a larger format for others where more screen real estate could be beneficial.

In all these devices current form it’s probably a bad user experience as the phone is just twice as thick as what you have now, but when that’s able to be skimmed down it will be amazing

Totally agree!!! People said the same thing when Android phones were at 6.3" and Apple was stuck on the iPhone 4 size. When Apple does it the Apple users will catch up to Android and realize how useful they are

You know one thing I have never, in 25 years of working in IT ever wanted?

A foldable display. Curved? I can think of some uses, sure.

This foldable phone craze is a clear case of "wow, we invented a foldable screen! where can we use it?".

Try something else. Roll up TV display. Wrap around helmet mounted display for full 180 degree vision. Something actually useful. A NEW PRODUCT.

Foldable phone display with a massive crease down the middle, that will no doubt break due to stress fracturing, etc. That's the best idea they can come up with? Try harder.

So when Apple does finally release it (best believe they will) you wont get it?

What's the point of a folding umbrella? Same concept. Something that can unfold to offer a larger better experience then folded for portable carry.

No. I will not. Not everything apple makes is automatically great. The Touch Bar being another "solution" looking for a problem. Their mice suck hard as well.

And I doubt they will anyway.

They're on board with AR. If you have a head mounted display that doesn't suck (e.g., think something similar to a regular set of glasses with a projection into the back side of the lens - like Google glass but 10 years of development time better), you don't need a phone screen AT ALL. There's no need to un-fold or un-roll a larger display because the whole freaking WORLD is your display.

Twice the thickness, so technically the footprint is doubled. But the point taken. Thicker form factor is more portable than wider form factor.
It doubles the volume, not the footprint. I take footprint to be the area occupied when laid on a surface. Semantics aside though yes that’s the idea :)

These are just stepping stones until we have a device like the tablet in Westworld. Nobody wanted the 5 kilos handheld phones of the 80's, yet here we are with its future in our pocket.

Nobody wants this. Why are they pushing foldable phones so badly? Even my android fanatic peers don’t care for one. Not with that ridiculous price tag.
Apple users said the exact same thing when phone went above 3.5" screens.

It's sucks and it's pointless until Apple does it.

You guys are so predictable.

Foldable screens maybe a way off mainstream at the moment but maybe they will take off.

Maybe the foldable dual display device like the Surface Duo might be better. Take notes with a pen while having a video call on the other screen.

Fold it up and carry it in your pocket like a regular phone.

It is all about choices, innovation and use cases.

Just because it was not invented by Apple does not mean it is rubbish.

Some people would love a foldable phone, some would love a dual screen phone.

There is a potential market for these devices. They will find a market and thrive or just dissappear like Betamax did when everyone went to VHS.

10 years down the line the slab of glass mobiles we have now may become like rotary dual phone from 60 years ago.

The fact is no one in the mainstream wants a $2k folding phone that's easy to damage with an OS that isn't even optimized for it. No one in the mainstream wants a $2k phone period. It's pointless till someone makes the tech more reliable and affordable. Of course without people who are willing to spend lots of money to test what amounts to terrible prototypes we would never have innovation. It's not an Apple vs Android thing with the exception of Apple normally is late to the game with new tech because they wait till it's better then perfect it more.

I never said anything about price. I was talking about the tech in general.

You can say the same about a £10,000 Apple watch. Few will buy one so is it pointless making one that price.

At this point it is not about how many get sold it is about being thankful that manufacturers are willing to try new things and maybe in a few years time the tech will be at a stage where it is reliable and able to come to market at a reasonable price.

If no one buys them then the manufacturers will move onto something else.

The fact is in 2 3 4 5 years down the line who knows.

A folding phone at £500 that is reliable and durable screen maybe exactly what the mainstream want.

Maybe we need to get past the screen in our pockets and come up with something different.
